Loosing scales....

FloridaHogs Jan 15, 2008 07:54 PM

I have an adult male snow cornsnake. I acquired him Dec 15th and he is in quarintine. The person I got him from had only had him about two months and told me that when he got the animal, it was infested with mites. He treated the mites and they were gone by the time I received the animal. OK that is the backgroung. The snake eagerly ate for me up until Dec 27th, when we had a cold snap. I did not think anything about it, but noticed today while I was cleaning his cage that he is losing his scales. I mean literly losing them. Looks like fish scales. He has several patched on his sides where there are no more scales. I put a diluted betadine solution on the "raw" areas, and plan on taking him to the vet tomorrow. Any ideas on what is going on? Could this still be a reaction to the mites? Thanks

So, got back from the vet. Zamboni is going to be getting Baytril injections, daily diluted betadine soaks, and a topical silver sulfadiazine cream for the areas that have lost the scales. Sounds like fun huh!?!

Yup, fun indeed. I've never seen it, but apparently the skin can become infected after severe mite infestations. The mites are gone, but the skin was still injured. Good luck, I'm sure your snow will still look amazing after all is said and done
