Feeding in a separate enclosure

eppon Aug 26, 2003 11:21 AM

When I get my bearded dragon I plan to feed him/her in a separate enclosure so I don't have to worry about crickets hiding in the cage. I plan to have the regular enclosure on a timer and won't transfer to the feeding enclosure for at least an hour after the lights go on, but do I have to have this separate feeding enclosure heated also? The dragon will only be in the feeding enclosure for insect feedings (10 minutes, 2-3 times a day). Vegies will be available in the regular enclosure all day.

I was just wondering if the dragon will be able to digest everything ok if it eats in a nonheated enclosure. Hope that wasn't too muddled! Thanks!

No, you don't need lighting in the feeding enclosure. Your dragon will bask after it's done eating to digest.

If it's only for a short period of time, like you said - 10 minutes, then your beardie should be fine. It's the hour or two after they eat their meal that they need to warm up to digest. I feed my beardies in a see-through plastic rubbermaid container with the non-slip padding on the bottom. I just place the container on the kitchen table and let my beardies chase the crix down. The container is about 2 feet long and 16 inches wide and 6 inches tall. It has slippery sides so the crickets can't get out. I got it at Walmart for $4.
