So many diets,,,,so little time to .....

RoadSpawn Jan 16, 2008 12:46 AM

There are way too many diets out there. Some help or advice would be much appreciated.

I was asked if I would take a 4' iguana that was taken to a fire station. I couldn't say no, so now he's in my care. I'm not use to vegetarians. I keep monitors and snakes. I've been doing research and found way too many diets: MK salad, Iguana den diet, etc.

He is not eating all that well, just a few nibbles and he appears to have darken skin over his head.

His temps are good and I've begun to soak him in a shallow tub of water once a day for about 15 minutes just in case he is dehydrated. I know most monitors that are in bad shape are due to dehydration, incorrect temps, poor diet.

I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Hello and thanks for the response. His basking is about 94 degrees. On the cool end it's about 75 degrees. I also have a uvb light for him. I have him in wire cage right now. I know he should be in an enclosure that holds humidity but I don't have one for him right now. I know that heat in a open cage will suck the humidity right out of reptiles. I will be buliding one very soon. I'm trying to compensate with the daily soaking in warem water and that started yesterday. I got him this past Saturday. He has a wound on the upper front portion of his head near his nostrals that seems to be healed or is healing. He is calm and when I got him to put him in the water tub he remained that way. I know for monitors, if they are very calm it usually means something is wrong either health wise or with their husbandry. As far the feeding goes, I hope you are right and his lack of interest in food is due to the season. He is pretty awsome. I've never really bothered to notice igunas before but since I had him, I really like him.

Don't focus on the specifics, learn the basic principles.

Base your diet on dark leafy greens such as collared and dandelion.

Using these as a stable and adding other veggies every now and then is a good base.
