Female going crazy after male intro

HeathN Jan 16, 2008 02:40 PM

This is a question for the experienced breeders out there. I just put my male ghost in with my female anery. The male is all oo-la-la, but the female immediately was trying to find a way out of the cage. The male is an 04 about 5.5 ft, not fat but trim, the female is an early 05, just a month or two shy of 3 years and 6 ft and about 13 lbs. Should I seperate them and try again in a few days? Will she settle down in a day or two? Does this mean she will not breed with him? Thank you in advance for any input.

I'm not experienced and I'm not a breeder but your female might not be mature yet. Do you have any other mature females in the room? Has he left sperm plugs?

Yes, there are other mature females in the room. A female he has already bred earlier, a het albino female, and an anery het snow. The het albino and anery het snow are in with males at the moment. She has the size and the age to be ready to breed, but then not all boas mature the same. Thanks!

No doubt on the maturity, why people rush this I'll never understand. I know why !! but just struggle with understanding it.

I suppose it could be a maturity issue, but perhaps not. I have a proven 02 female that behaved the same way for a few weeks. Just last week, she finally settled down and let the male pay his respects. Before that, he'd been chasing her all over the place, and she was content to let him chase....

Maybe it is nature's way of making sure the male is serious, healthy, etc... The ones that are willing and capable of pursuing are the ones that get to pass on thier genes?

In any event, it clearly had nothing to do with the female being immature. She's 5 years old, 7', 25 lbs. and proven (27 healthy, full term, living, 1 slug).

Best of luck!

The female may just be extremely responsive to the male being introduced. This same thing happened this year with a pair of mine. The female was tail flinging all over the place and acting "horny" I suppose. It turned out to be nothing other than her excitement. One of my friends did have this same issue with a female, similar to what you are explaining and the situation we encountered. In my friends situation the female ate the male after acting excited or highly active after introduction. So my best advice would be to keep an eye on her even though this may not be an issue at all. Just wanted to let everyone know that the female has settled down and seems to be enjoying the company! I looked this morning and they were coiled up together like they were made for each other. Thanks to all who gave input. Take care.
