Getting an early start........DUW

rainbowsrus Jan 16, 2008 03:48 PM

Well, it's come time to set up my breeding groups, figured since I'm already getting sperm plugs that the males are ready to go. I've decided to not breed several individuals...

Dottie - Hypo female - simply has not put on enough weight, just over 2.25lbs, not close enough to the minimal 3 lbs for breeding so another year before she's ready to go.

Boo - normal female - has not regained enough since last litter. Probably weighs "enough" but IMO not filled out enough. She's given me 106 babies in four consecutive years, time for a little vacation. (pic is from when she was gravid)

Tommy - after shuffling around the females, Tommy has no dates scheduled, will be a pinch hitter if need be.

Rusty - was already planned to be a pinch hitter this year.

Now for the revised batting order for 2008

Group #1, Fluffy, Daisey and Savannah - top notch Calico offspring:

Fluffy

Daisey

Savannah

Group #2, Mickey, Crystal and Rose - outcrossed het hypos
Mickey hypo

Crystal

Rose

Group #3 Dumbo, Eve and Minnie - hypo's and het hypos and first hypo breeding trial for Eve
Dumbo hypo

Eve het striped hypo

Minnie het hypo

Group #4 Fred, Betty and Wilma - high color babies, they worked so well this year, gonna keep them together again in 2008.
Fred

Betty

Wilma

Group #5, Phoenix, Ann and Tink - more high color normals including two new breeders from 2005.
Phoenix

Ann

Tink

Group #6, Hook, Molly and Wendy - color and bullseyes? All new breeders, two from 2005, one from 2004.
Hook

Molly

Wendy

Group #7 Diablo, Clover and Lucy - more color, Veteran Clover will be joined by two new breeders from 2005.
Diablo

Clover

Lucy

Group #8, Ol Yeller, Cate and Nikki - Ol Yeller is a very light yellow animal, being bred with two new breeders from Jeff Clark's 2005 babies. Hoping to make more yellow phase babies.
OL Yeller

Cate

Nikki

Group #9, Porky and Bullseye - two old faithful breeders!!
Porky

Bullseye

Group #10, Lefty and Petunia - two old friends, they produced Lucy in 2005, let's see if they can make more just like her.
Lefty

Petunia

Moved several females to line up everything for the 2008 groups, opened the tubes and introduced the males last night. Already saw Hook this morning with his parts partially exposed, not sure if he had been musking or actually been using them....

Haven't finished looking over the pics and stuff but what is on Rusty's dorsal pattern off to the right side? Pinch hitters and sorry Dottie isn't going this year for you but hopefully she will give you some great keepers next sure and very wise decision I believe that will pay off in the long run
Bob

rainbowsrus Jan 16, 2008 04:02 PM

That is some serious fading he's shown, not sure what to make of it. Would breed him but he's still a little on the small side and that fading started at a year or two so not sure how to tell if it will show short of raising up babies.

As much as I really wanted to breed Dottie and had saved her a spot, in the back of my mind I thought she wouldn't be ready. My earlier posts about the '08 lineup even had something like "subject to change" and she was the one I was thinking of.

Dang that was oh so quick!!!

Yesterday evening I saw this in Fred's water bowl...

It's a sperm plug or hemipenal shed. That was the second one I had found in the last few weeks so I decided to get things started and set up the groups.

Well tonight I found this...

That's Fred tail wrapped with Wilma!!!

strictly4fun Jan 16, 2008 09:18 PM

when was the last day you feel comfortable feeding them around Jan. 1st or so and that was a little bigger than a small? or half the girth which would be a properly sized meal?

rainbowsrus Jan 16, 2008 09:24 PM

They were all offered a normal sized prey item on 01/07 or 01/08, most wolfed!

I will still continue to feed if they want food, seperating groups one at a time.

Group #2, Mickey, Crystal and Rose - outcrossed het hypos

Well you do have champagne taste....

Group #1 will be a very VERY limited release, half of what will be made available are already spoken for.

Group #2 will be veryu nice hets, I might suggest mixing with group #3 for more genetic diversity.

Group #8 should have several to go around.

Just remember, champagne taste cannot be had on a beer budget

I really like the

Rose x Mickey
Fred x Wilma
Lefty x Petunia (if they make a Diablo you don't need another snake with the same genes just higher price tag)

that fading on Rusty is awesome looking and I wonder if he has anything hidden and the collection pic showing his reddish-orange colored crescents was simply stunning best of luck Dave and I hope they all take for you
Bob

rainbowsrus Jan 16, 2008 04:35 PM

Rose was a last minute substitution for Dottie, of course that caused a ripple effect through several other pairings, Really intend to use only stunning animals for outcrossing AND unrelated to each other so will have THE most diverse line of hypos on the planet!!

Fred and Wilma, what more can I say other than Daisey and Pebbles!!!!

Lefty and Petunia, D'oh, brain fart, meant to mention that in the post but forgot and only mentioned Lucy. Thanks for the reminder / kick in the backside!!

Dunno on Rusty, he's looking to be a long, long term project.

Thanks Bob, and I'm not sure I want them ALL to take, not that I'd say no, just if they all take, dang that's three times as many females as I've ever had take in one season before.

Good news is I will be over-run with babies and I do have wholesale buyers lined up. Even better news for my customers as the lower end animals will all be gone, leaving only the cream!!!!

If they all don't take, I hope it is not any of the pairings I mentioned especially Mickey x Rose as another het female would really compliment the arsenal now leaving the lone spot for a hypo male so maybe the bill collectors will go light on me this year and I have some fun money to play withlol Really would like Phoenix (where was Diablo???) to make some real nice normals for you and may the boa gods be with you this year

You may be broke but I'll be plumb wore out from all this. I could have several HUNDRED babies this year. Even using low percentages, I could easily produce twice the number of BRB's alone than any prior year, not that far fetched to tripple that number. Add to that all the BCI litters I have in the ovens and/or still being worked on......... Those racks with three hundred baby slots are looking kinda small right now!!

I'm about to have the time of my life!!!!!!!

I go in my snake room and have to pinch myself.

BTW, have started construction on my second snake room, an addition to the first. Carving a room o0ut of the garage to house the larger boas. Will have heat and AC and LOTS of insulation to keep that nice heat where it belongs

rainbowsrus Jan 16, 2008 05:44 PM

to do both, get some and make some!!!!!

The majority of my collection were produced by others. And BY FAR the majority of my babies have gone to new homes. Now that I have sooooo many diferent bloodlines, I could totally close off the colony and only release from here on out!! Most likely will do just that, EXCEPT for the one of a kind special animals like the pearls!!!

I know what you mean, some "big breeders" think their snakes [bleep]e don't stink. Well let me tell you, my snakes can peel paint sometimes!!! Not always, mostly just smells like [bleep]e, but every once in a while, you walk into the room and just know it's gonna hurt when you open whatever door it's behind!!

I decided long before I got to where I am today I was not gonna be one of those breeders. Maybe I'll get excluded from "the club", but couldn't care less!!! I'm a gonna produce some awesome, smelly [bleep]e, snakes. Then again, there's not any big BRB breeder club so....no worries.

And thanks....
