Hi Tom!
All of the bagged Children's Playsand I've seen states that it's been prewashed but I would look to make sure before I bought/used any. It's washed to get rid of silica dust which is harmful if inhaled.
I use it for my beardies and I mix a lil' in with the soil I use in my monitors' cages. The first time I used it I washed it to make sure there wasn't any dust in it and there wasn't it. I haven't washed another bag since. But still, it is a good safety precaution.
Playsand doesn't clump together while it's wet or after it gets wet & dries. That's why it's good substrate material, little to no impaction issues. The soil I use in my monitors' cages, local soil, will harden after getting wet & drying out. I use the playsand to help keep it from doing so.
Have a good one!
