At what age do grey rat snakes reach their full length?

KatGrrrl Aug 26, 2003 11:57 AM

I have a 10 mnth old grey rat snake and was wondering how old she'll be when she is fully grown.

Thanx in advance.

Kat.

All snakes continue growing throughout their lives, but the rate of growth slows as the snake ages.

>>I have a 10 mnth old grey rat snake ...

She's now probably between 24 to 30 inches long. Average growth rate in the first two years is generally about 1 to 1.5 inches per month (but can be up to two inches in some months). At two years old, she should be between 36 to 50 inches, although probably closer to the lower number.

>>and was wondering how old she'll be when she is fully grown.

She'll be a breedable adult when she attains about 48-inches-plus length and weighs about 300 to 400 grams. This will most likely be when she's about three or four years old (occasionally happens by age two). At four to six years old, the rate of growth slows to about four-to-six inches per year, (Pantherophis obsoletus ssp.) rat snakes six to ten years old grow at approximately one-point-five to two inches per year, and after age ten it slows to a little over an inch per year.

There are quite a few questions on size and growth that are posted off and on. Your answer covers most of the ones I've seen. Thanks for posting.

That answered all those little nagging questions in my head about growth. So I suppose it takes a while for a rat snake to hit 6 feet. At least 4 years.

Thanks!
