Humidity in Vision Rack-- Dry So Cal??

jime Jan 17, 2008 02:17 AM

Have a handful of 07's in Vision rack with V35 tubs. Today, swithced to Aspen bedding from cypress based on rec from other. My concern is how to keep humidity up during this dry time of year in S. California. Since vision is open with many vents, I was hoping to get suggestions from others. I do have a small plastic humid hide with moist moss--some use it--some do not. I am just trying to provide best environment poss. My thought is to cover vent holes in vision with glass? Any suggestions? Thanks for any help...Jim I am in Riverside-Ca (very dry with darn Santa Ana winds!!!!)

I love my Vision racks. Cypress is better at holding water than aspen. I think cypress resists mold better. Having said that,I use aspen.
You could closeup some holes easy enough, I'm sure. Mabey some plastic packing tape?
I would raise the humidity in the room.(better)

I have aspen in BoaPhile raxx that are closed tops.....I have cypress in open topped raxx that were homemade......the cypress is kept damp enough , not too much, at times by dumping water into them, quarts if needed......start small....

After dealing with the dry winter last year - I went with a humidifier in the snake room and it seems to make everyone much happier - tho I don't think my computer likes it much. Usually when the Santa Anas come through tho - I mist like crazy - get one of those hand pump misters from the nursery. Right now the humidity in my house is around 15% - the snake room is sitting at 40% and the cages are at 57%.

Like you - I figured if the humidifier didn't work our next step would be some plexi either over some of the holes or slid in to cover some of top of the tub - we didn't get that far tho - the humidifier is working great. In the past I've also used wet sponges as a cheap effective method to keep humidity up in cages during the real dry periods. Changing over to Cypress is another good suggestion - but it's always a pain to find around here.

Good luck!

Go to Wal-Mart in the material isle they sell something that looks like shower curtain. Buy some yards of it and cut it to fit about 80% of the top and it should be fine. I use it on my freedom breeders works great and cheap.

I live in Arizona. We have days here that get down to about 8% humidity. I use a warm mist humidifier that allows me to set the desired humidity level. I found that if I didn't use filtered water that it dispersed a "white-dust" which is basically the minerals in the water and it went through the vents in my house and deposited a layer of this stuff on every surface in the house. If you experience this, be sure to switch to filtered water. It took me forever to figure out what it was.
