WSVN (Miami, Florida) 16 January 08 Miami to be the only provider of antidote for deadly venom
Southwest Miami-Dade, Fla: Miami will be the sole provider for the antivenom that neutralizes coral snake venom.
Miami-Dade's Antivenin Unit will now be the only agency with access to the antidote in the nation. However, the production for the antivenin in all U.S. has stopped. After its expiration in September, Miami will be the only provider. "Logistics wise, if it's a bite in Louisiana, we're going to have to scramble quickly and have to get that out on the next flight," said Scott Mullin from the Miami-Dade Antivenin Unit.
Coral snakes are found in 11 different states, predominantly in the Southeast United States and throughout the entire state of Florida. The largest antivenom bank can be found at a Miami-Dade fire rescue station.
The unit was able to get the proper permits to import from other areas such as South and Central America.
No coral snake bite deaths have been reported in the United States since the antivenin became available.

I think there was a fatal coral snake bite last year in south Florida.

Your thinking is pretty much correct. It was in Bonita, Florida in June, 2006. Brlow is a link to our archived copy of the news story.
