Accidental Bite?

charmer Jan 17, 2008 04:18 PM

How often do you guys see an accidental bite from a breeder to a breeder? I've heard stories, especially noted when they involve the eating of one or the other snake... but what about a nice, somewhat deep, ragged bite?
I leave for three days out of the week and have someone keep an eye on my snakes until I am home from work... I've had my pair of Suri's together off and on, wondering if I can trigger a breeding, and have never had an issue yet (even when they had to share the enclosure for quite a while when I was awaiting new cages). However, I came home last night and when I re-checked and cleaned a few cages this morning, I noticed two marks on my gal... pretty ragged looking too. There was a small possibility that she could have burned herself, but after looking and cleaning it a bit, I realized they were perfectly aligned and had none of the tell-tale signs of a burn. Not to mention, she has equilibrium issues, she hates being held and I've never seen her climb her walls like some of my other snakes. It looks as if the male had a mistaken feeding response, or mood swing, and latched onto her... my guess is that while struggling his teeth caused a razor type action, digging deeper and doing more damage than a simple bite to a hand. He's been moved to a separate enclosure now and she seems to be fine now that she is doctored up and resting... but I was just wondering how often this occurs, if at all, for some of you other keepers?
They were fed the day before I left, rinsed, reintroduced the next day, and watched until they settled and I left for work. I do not underfeed, nor do I believe I overfeed. I've got the feedings to about a rat or two every couple weeks because of the type of boas they are, and the age. I don't believe there was scent of food since I rinsed them, I didn't reintroduce them immediately (12-24hr period between), and the cage had been cleaned and sanitized while feeding... so I'm fairly certain this is a chance happening.
Input?
Thanks guys.

Snakes dont always play nice, occasionally some like it ruff !
Allow a week or so for the wound(s) to scab over good before re-intro.
She should fine.
