RESCUE TEXAS RAT SNAKE

flameethrower Jan 17, 2008 09:33 PM

I was told to post my rescued guy here sicne fomr a guy on this forum.

I rescued this Texas Black Rat snake form a reptile shop who was given this from a owner who couldn’t provide for it anymore. wasn’t kept in a clean tank at all. dried poop and pee all over tank. took me like 30 Mins of scrubbing to get it out. all he had was a 2 gallon bowl for water and a huge log that’s it. no real hides so he never had a hide. hes a beautiful Snake eating medium rats once a week Which i told the shop to lower his intake since hes getting fat. scales are streched so im gonna only feed him small rats every 14 days to help out.. at 6’6" hes pretty aggressive though. when i held him at first he was calm but then went all nuts and tried to take off. and hes real thick. was real hard to force back in tank. Well here’s the pictures for you guys. I hope he calms down for me since i got him set up with hides he uses non stop now. ENJOY!

If he doesn't bite, that is tame for a Texas rat. LOL! I have raised mine from yearlings to 3.5 year olds (est. about 4.5 ft long now), and they still get in a nippy mood once in a while. Other than the occasional mood, they are very tame.

well at least your able to hold him. try holding a 6'6" rat that is strong and tried to lung out of hand doing the alligator tumble in my grip LOL hes a fighter. the shop said hes bitten me a lot. i held him twich with an aggressive grip restricting him and no attepmts to bite me so yea im lucky on the biting.

Sounds like you have everything pretty much under control!

like the others stated, a Texas that DOESN'T bite the crap out of you,...is a TAME ONE!!.LOL!

Also, careful, slow, deliberate movements can be key in technique. Try not to give it a nice target in front of it "home" in on. This helps a great deal!

good luck!, ~Doug

Yeah, if a Texas Rat doesn't draw blood he's tame. Even CBB texas rats bite all the time. But I think that they must calm down a little as they get older. Under 3 feet and they act like Cojo. Over 5 feet and they only bite most of the time instead of all the time.
