heat bulbs?

youngherplover Jan 17, 2008 10:38 PM

I was wondering what type/brand of bulbs you guys use to get te high to 120 in your uro's cage. I don't have one yet, but I plan on gettin gone soon. The cage that I have for it now is a 40 gal. I'm using a 10.0 UVB light, 24". But it doesn't do heat.
Is there a certain brand or type of bulb that does the job? What about a UTH?

Thanks for any advise!

I am getting a uro soon to everyone told me you can use the uth but they really love to bask and need the above heat vs belly heat. You just need flood or spot lights and you have to play around with the distance and wattage til you get it right.

Since they are baskers, I would recommend the heat coming from above from a ceramic heat emitter, or a regular basking lamp bulb along with your UVB light. You can also get a combo UVB/heat bulb. I have my uro in a forty gallon breeder sized tank and use a 150W flood lamp bulb to get her basking tile between 110-120 degrees F along with a fluorescent UVB bulb with no heat for UVB exposure. I actually turn off all lights and heat at night and give her a nightime drop to room temp (68-70 degrees F) with no ill results, and actually read where it was beneficial and simulated what they are exposed too in the wild. So, if you used a combo UVB/Heat bulb that gave you the basking temps needed, you only need to worry about turning one bulb off at night. I have tried a combo UVB/heat bulb with her cage set up, but even the 150W combo bulb did not get her basking site up high enough. The 150W flood lamp does. Just remember, they need the UVB AND heat during the day.

thanks for the help! I tried my two 100w basking bulbs and got the temp up to 111 after about an hour. Would that be okay? I think it would get hotter later in the day after they've been on for longer, especially the tile that they shine down on.

Again, thanks for your advise!

I believe 110 is sufficient. I keep mine at 120 degrees. Just make sure feeding and activity are OK. You could also put an elevated platform like a brick or something on that side that the uro can climb up on and get closer to the basking lights to increase its temps. I have a branch in my tank my uro can climb up on to get closer if she needs too.
