Sable Shed OT Loss

medyssa Jan 18, 2008 11:31 AM

So Sable, my little spitfire red from Dave shed two days ago and also ate so I was able to get a couple quick pictures of her, she doesnt like sitting still so it was a bit hard. I will post them later this evening while I am watching American Idol.
I am also very sad because my Veiled Chameleon, Calais died this week. I am looking for another one but then I am still paying bills from the holidays. Just like everyone else. Ah well, the weekend is almost here!

Hey Jess, glad to hear about Sable and will be looking forward to seeing the pics.

Sorry for your loss, I hear Chams can be hard to keep??

They're typically said to be "hard to keep" but from what I learned caring for him, its very time consuming more than anything. I dont know what happened to make him get sick and die but from what I have researched and read before buying him at the San Jose show from Blue Beast, I did everything correct. I didnt notice any worms or nasties in his stool and he was fine up until the day he died, giving me no time to call the breeder for advice or my vet for an appointment. I am going to try again though, I had thought that the veileds were pretty hardy but now I am talking to other breeders and looking at information on panther chameleons and they are supposed to be better than the veileds. Just like any animal though you will have different opinions from "experts". I dont have the money I need for a panther so I am going to take the time to get more information, I know the veileds well, since I spent so much time looking into them before buying and now I think I want something more eye-catching.
And yeah, Sable is doing great she's got some great color coming in.

I agree that's where the "hard to keep" typically comes from, either needing lots of care or very specific setups. Kind of like BRB's being hard to keep, duh, it's way easy with the right setups and daily (check/clean).

BTW, Zeek was looking good in that pic you posted for anyone that didn't realize you were talking Sable and posted a pic of Zeek. Have new fresh shed pics of Ziggy I'll be posting up sometime soon along with a couple of pearls and Amber. I have a bunch of snakes in blue which means a lot will be shedding in the next week or so!!!

yeah I accidentally selected it, the only picture I have of sable is her with the santa hat on. When I was looking through my picture list i must have accidentally selected the one of Zeek, its a bit old, a few months but he is still a looker! He and Isis have been doing much better in their new cage. I saw the pictures of Zoe you had in your line-up post. I looked in on Sango and Cherry last night and it looked like they had been at it. Yay!

TimS Jan 18, 2008 01:25 PM

cant waitt o see the pics fresh sheds are always the best pics lol and sorry to hear about your cam if you do decide to get a panther get a male of course lol and how old was your vield? and was it male or female? i wish cams lived longer cause i would deff get a panther but $400 some odd dollars for a animal that lives 3-5 years isnt worth it to me i just dont have that kind of money lol hence me liking male vields from nice breeding stock $35 lol plus that gives me extra for there nice lil expensive setup

strictly4fun Jan 18, 2008 05:18 PM

I think with hypos though Tim that they do have that dark day or two towards the end of the shed cycle and I am going to try and capture it cuz I've been taken right after shed picks myself and the one of the darkest times I've gotten her on film was like 10 days before a shed cycle so I will keep you posted

TimS Jan 18, 2008 07:35 PM

alrighty then lol i know my hypo when she goes into shed well my hypo harly she gets real dark unlike my hypo arab whom is like he gets darker but nothign serious

I so sorry to hear about the loss of your Veiled. How old was he? My Cham is 2.5 years old... so he's middle aged as far as Chams go.

Yeah, I would agree that a Panther would be an awesome next Cham.. they are so amazing! I think someday I want a Sambava. Which are your favorites?

He was only about 8 months old, I had had him for about 2 months, since I got him at the san jose show in November, Dave might remember the exact date, since he was vending there. I am still really upset about it, it was very sad to have to bury him last night, my boyfriend loved him too and my boyfriend doesnt like ANY of my snakes or the crested geckos.
I really like the blue bar ambilobes, sambavas and ambanjas, I would LOVE to have a carpet because they are smaller but I hear that they are pretty challenging since most are still WC. I am looking at screameleons and a couple other private breeders, of course I want a male but perhaps an older one not a baby.

unless you are trying to breed veiled you want male. The male life span is a short 3-5 years but the female lifespan is only about 2. I figure you already knew this from your comment but thought I would put it out there just in case.

Veiled do tend to be one of the hardiest of the chameleons. They come from areas like Saudi Arabia and Yemen where moisture is not garunteed. They have even found colonies of them that are over a mile from water and where there are months at a time without rain. Because of this, last time I checked, they were assuming that the veiled chams actually can get all the moisture they need from the combination of insects and vegetation that they eat. Although the additional moisture is good for them. On a side note did you know they can be trained to drink from water dishes?

One thing you might consider before getting another cham, unless you've already done this, is getting a group of at least 3 but prefferably more like 6 plants in pots set up for the cham. I always used ficus because that is what the veiled I helped take care of like to eat and it worked well for climbing/shelter. Depending on where you get the plants you may need to keep them away from the cham for some time to clear any harmfull chemicals out of the plants system. For the same reason if they used a fertilized soil I would change soil or get it from a different shop. Regardless of where you get it though you will want to thoroughly wash the plant to get any surface fertilizers or insecticides off.

Sorry to hear your loss and best of luck with the new one.

Sean.

Thanks for the post Sean. I am really not interested in breeding them, at least not for a few years, maybe when I get used to them, since eventhough I dont know of anything I did wrong that would cause my chameleon to die, I feel like there might be something I missed. I have checked and as far as I know, with the research I did there wasnt anything that I can tell was wrong, he just got sick, no worms in his stool, the plant in his cage was from a nursery that doesnt use pesticides or fertilizer, i use distilled water for sraying his cage, calcium and multivitamins on his gutloaded crickets, UVB light plus heat lamp in the right gradations of temps. I could list it all but you probably know it.
Anyway, I would only get a female carpet cham, IF I got one, like I said before I hear that they are extremely hard to care for and few people know anything about them because only in the last couple years have they been imported to the US. You cant really find CB of them, if you do, they are gone before you get to ask questions from the supplier.
I just found out this week that I will be moving, not far, but enough so that I dont want to stress the animal out with transferring him in the car or anything too much. I am just going to wait until I have the extra cash for a juvi Ambilobe and get everything cleaned, sanitized, some new stuff (I want a habba mist) and some more info on panthers.

Well good luck with the move and the new addition once you are settled in and get them.

It does sound like you pretty much had everything covered from the things you were listing. Sometimes it is just bad luck and they catch something they aren't able to fight off.

They kinda fascinate me. I bought a bunch of books and did lots of hours research and decided tthat I couldn't provide the proper environment for ideal habitat. They still bother me though, those blue bars and red bars are so pretty. If I do ever get some I would attempt breeding. Sorry yours died. Any ideas what caused it?

medyssa Jan 19, 2008 03:07 PM

So here is the picture of Sable from the other night. She is looking pretty good. I got her from Dave late last year. I wish I could remember which of his two snakes were her parents.

Also, a couple of WAY OT pictures: One is a picture of Opi, a two week old sheep that my boyfriend's roommate's sheep gave birth to. He's pretty cute. The other is a salamander I found at his house this morning while I was poking around hoping that it has been warm enough to get some of the native snakes to peek out of hibernation. I love short winters out here in california. No luck with the snakes but this little salamander is a type that is pretty common to my area.

Enjoy!!!

Thats cool that so many are in your yard, did you go out and take that picture just for me? I havent seen many since I moved up to Fremont from Salinas. There's bigger ones close to the lettuce fields with spots on them.
Did I tell you? I'm moving closer to you!!!

not a nikon D40 if yoru gonna do that just save a lil extra for the D80 or better lol

medyssa Jan 22, 2008 11:20 PM

Hey Bob, my camera works just fine, I chose it over a nikon. Those things are so damn bulky! ITs a Sony Powershot A620, top of the line about 2 years ago, I just really need better lighting, the pictures I take in my laundry/snake room come out looking dark and I hate adjusting them because it washes them out. I am investing in a good overhead light for my snake room when I move in the next couple months. That way you cant make fun of my pictures. All in good fun I know, I wasnt offended.

I'll get to work on that picture, this week is going to be a bit hectic, I just found out last tuesday that I have to move. Fun. So as I sort through my snake stuff to thin out the extra stuff I don't need I'll take more pictures of her. I don't know that this picture will help but it was her "christmas" picture.
