I need help on how to cut my black throat nails he/she is around 4 1/2 ft long and the nails are 2 to 3 inch long . I have a pair dog nail trimmers. My Question is how far up should I cut ? I really dont want to hurt him in any way.

dude just clip the tip off...if he bleeds then you went too far. Dont worry he will be fine.

Also...learn the basics...so far I think you do not have a clue how to provide even the basic needs of your new responsibility.

Very odd to acquire one of the largest lizards in the world and not have at least the bare minimum husbandry understanding, but whatever. I could be wrong, but your questions so far tell me otherwise.

Read through this site...pay attention to FR. Check out Pro-Exotic's site, great basic info there.

Good luck -

Tom

you would clip it like you would a dog's nails. if you cut past the quick, it will bleed.

I am raising a water monitor and never need or needed to trim it's nails. Why do you want to trim it's nails? It could be dangerous and traumatic for your monitor.

If you set them up properly then they should not need to be trimmed. One of my waters basking spot is composed of two 12x12 brick/blocks and she wears her nails down and keeps them at descent lenght just fom climbing on and off that one basking spot.

I also use logs that she climbs to help keep them from getting too long. You need to set it's enviroment up with the basic needs as well as other needs in mind such as the smallest details like it's nails!!!!!!! I have learned how to supply my water with the basics and "think" how to improve things beyond the basics on my own from this sight and a few others.

Keep reading up on this forum as well as monitor forums on other sites. If you are going to raise this monitor to be healthy and to adulthood then you need to "think" on your own, that is one concept this site drilled, pounded and surgically implanted in my noggin!!! I don't mean to be harsh for I am no expert but with the experience I do have, I can tell you their care gets more demanding as the grow in size (some may disagree, just my limited (only have 1 monitor) experience so far).

Good luck, I find that asking a question even when you don't get the answer you were hoping for is alot better than not asking. I guess the bottom line is you need to re-evalute your set-up and husbandry to make sure you are meeting the monitors basic needs and beyond.
