Advice vs. Advise

yeahyeah Jan 18, 2008 07:14 PM

Ok I'm sorry but I see this all the time and it just bugs the crap out of me.

Advise is a verb. ex: I am advising you to not go into the ocean if you can't swim.

Advice is a noun. ex: My advice is that you don't go in the ocean if you can't swim.

But the people who need it most won't read it/ won't understand the difference anyway.

I'm not trying to correct everything as I know that would be impossible, but the amount of times I see people use advise when they should use advice is just ridiculous. If my post makes one person realize when to use advice rather than advise, I'll have made the forum a better place lol.

constrictorkeepr Jan 19, 2008 01:11 PM

i'll take it under advisement.

With all the crap going on in the world this troubles you? I really do have to laugh every time I see these posts on spelling and grammar - I mean is it really that big of a deal to you that some people interchange advise with advice? Is your world really that small?

If this truly is a problem for you - might I suggest you find a more formal environment to hang out in - because expecting everyone online to use proper grammar and/or spelling in a casual online environment such as this is ridiculously petty.

Don't sweat the small stuff.

"With all the crap going on in the world this troubles you?" - You make it sound like I'm not concerned about poverty or the war in Iraq just because I made a post about grammar.

I don't care if people r not formal, use internet shorthand if u want. Maybe some of the people asking for "advise" are kids. Yes kids should learn proper grammar. Not using proper grammar makes you sound less educated. What happens later on down the road when that kid applies to colleges and sends his resume out looking for jobs? I sure hope he spells everything right because not doing so will hurt his chances. I appreciate that you answer questions for people that have been posted many times before. I'm sure you have helped many people to care for their snakes, but maybe you are the one living in a small world. I have seen that word misused time and time again and figured I would post the correct usage hoping to help someone out.

I advice you to shoot yourself for your ignorance.

Maybe someone will take your advise though, not me!

LMAO

We all have our pet peeves. I personally like those who "except all forms of payment". I guess that means they are giving their snakes away!

LKirkland Jan 24, 2008 03:11 PM

are some acceptions.
