eucalyptus mulch??

spider916 Jan 19, 2008 09:51 AM

can it be used. i am finding that my sources for 100 % cypress are drying up and switching to a blend of cypress and cedar or pine. plus other wood that are available at the time. i know that heavy perfumed woods are bad but what about the eucalyptus. the reason i asked is that my neighbor uses it in his garden and i have picked it up and smelled it fresh out of the bag and to me there was nore more smell than with cypress. any thoughts would be appreciated.

I know of a few big breeders that are switching to it because it naturally repels cockroches, and they seem to be doing well with it.
One of them switched his rainbow boas from cyrpess to it and they love it.

Worth a shot.

that mulch actually REPELS water, so it can be tough to work with.

Also, eucalypts is vary aromatic and full of volatile oils (similar to cedar in that respect). I'd need some convincing to accept it as harmless....

I'll agree with Brad on this one.

The Tannins and Phenols in eucalyptus mulch are very potent.
It could lead to the similar respiratory problems caused by using cedar.
Although these oils may repel arthropods, I would be concerned about what effects eucalyptus mulch might pose to your reptiles.
Cyprus mulch seems a much safer choice.

I think I'll just continue with newspaper as a substrate.
Can't go wrong there.
