Possible black x yellow rat snake??

Kojak69 Jan 19, 2008 08:27 PM

I was recently given this little beauty that a neighbor found in the Gainsville, FL area while moving some mulch.
I have 2 yellow rats already, one of which I caught when it was not much bigger than this one.
What is throwing me is the huge color contrast between the two. Also, this new snake does not appear to show the faintest striping that my little yellow did at about the same size/age.
If anyone is familiar with snakes from the above mentioned area, I'd love to hear from you. Anyone else that cares to take a guess, please feel free. But do tell me why you have come up with your conclusion, as simply stating "It looks like a yellow rat snake to me" isn't really the kind of feedback I'm looking for.
The darker, brownish snake is the mystery guest. The other snake is the yellow rat snake that I caught in the summer of last year......

Compare to my yellow rat....

In the yellow rat you can already detect the tale-tell stripes strating to show between the saddles on her dorsal pattern. I'm still scratching my head!
Thanks for looking, and for any help.

If anyone can verify this, I now believe this to be a hatcling Gulf Hammock rat snake.

who knows, because you live in frorida it could be any rat snake from all over the world released into the wild by a bad owner.

either way its still a ratsnake, just have fun with it and maybe by adulthood it will show its true colors.

if you end up breeding it just dont sell the babies as pure yellow rats
