It's all in a name...both on and off top

FRoberts Jan 19, 2008 11:35 PM

It has been awhile since I posted and have recently started naming all my animals. I used to try not naming them but have decided that I can not try to protect myself regarding personal attachment by simply avoiding naming them. I am attached to each one of them. I cried once when my 14 year old reticulated python needed to be put to sleep for a spinal injury he suffered during breeding trials with a 25 foot female who laid 96 fertile eggs in 1995 (Roberts/Juiliano). Most retics lay 30 eggs. This female was the one you hear about in the books...imported in the late 70's early 80's. She has passed within the last 5 years...I had to remove her from her enclosure as my friend could not do so....sad stuff...anyhow I have a few descendents of this bloodline...none named as of yet..I have over 50 animals to name...here are some I have named...

First we have A1 He used to be Amazon1. I have another but his name will not be A2 (haven't named him yet) I LOVE A1 sauce...lol

Next up is Agro my Yellow Anaconda..self explanatory...

Then we have his brother Mickey...no females can be obtained...they have been listed as Potentially dangerous by the state of NJ. Someone suggested I merely switch him out...they are a true $$$ product (nothing wrong with that...just not me that's all...my best friend is that type...I love him like a brother) of the science of Herpetoculture and just don't get it...NONE OF MY ANIMALS ARE PROJECTS TO BE SOLD...EVER...unless I literally DIE...I don't care what anyone says...NJ has GREAT laws..at least they grandfather animals you have on your permit. Most states due to having no laws...have opted to ban...very foolish approach to a resource that can make money and be renewed without depleting the wild populations and on top of that taxed as well.

Dumb Butt-heads!!!! Ya I got a Beav with that DAMMIT...lol

Rant...here he is...MAKE NO MISTAKE...I hate catch phrases..hehe

Here's Bugs...my best friend had bred Lucy Texas Rat Snakes and one was bug eyed...he was afraid I would feed her to one of my king snakes or perhaps a snapping turtle...but I got attached to her...

My Dumeril Boa's...Fat and Skinny...had a race...went to bed...hehe...childish I know...

A woman at work seen me leaving with empty boxes and in conservation I mentioned they where for my African rock python. She asked me what his name was ? I said he didn't have one. She named him Harry...so I named the female Sally...yeah yeah yeah...whatever...lol

Harry...

Sally...

Next we have Sole...bred scorps in 2000 and again in 2001...he is only one left out of all I had...he is from 2001 breeding and yes is 7 years old and only half grown...the literature says they shed like 7-8 times then die...he has molted over 30 times...slow fed regimen...

My Cape Gopher snake Panama Red...my brother's nickname when he was young..red head...not the other thing...hehe...

My African-Clawed Frog...his name is Laevis...

Yeah my African Bullfrog...Mikey...don't even go near him...especially naked...

Here is my male Albino Burmese Python...given to me by a neighbor that is half Cherokee...so here is a short synopsis of where I got his name...

Black Fox ( Inâlĭ ) A principal chief of the Cherokee who, under the treaty of Jan. 7, 1806, by which the Cherokee ceded nearly 7,000 sq. m. of their lands in Tennessee and Alabama, was given a life annuity of $100. He was then an old man. In 1810, as a member of the national council of his tribe, he signed an enactment formally abolishing the custom of clan revenge hitherto universal among the tribes, thus taking an important step toward civilization.-Mooney in 19 th Rep. B. A. E., 87, 1900.

Inâlĭ is his name...

I call this Reticulated male "The Old Man" he hails from the original Karl Hermann bloodline...that's why he is so dark and tame...

Next is my beautiful female Albino Reticulated Python.

Her name is Nafrati...better known to most...but tough for me to pronounce...Nefertiti...well not any more but still spelled that way for others like myself...

Lastly my two Brazilian's from Jeff Clark..

First we have the female...Cleopatra...

Lastly we have the male...Octavius...

well that's it for now...later folks...thanks for looking.

In 2000 someone one of my friends knows approached me to ask for my help in rehabbing a 1998 Python reticulatus. The snake was not moving and I though it was dead. But closer examination with a mag light revealed it would dilate her pupils.

I set her up in a vivarium with proper humidity/temperatures.

I also pulled 65.00 dollars out of my pocket and gave him the cash and said if she does live...I am keeping her...no way I am giving her back to you. She was 2 years old and barley 3 feet long.

Well I was at my "wits end" and went to an AOL born again Christian chat room to ask the to please pray for my snake.

Not well received at first for almost obvious reasons.

But I explained the Christ whom they believe in closed the old testament upon his demise and resurrection.

Therefore never mind stepping on their heads...Thou should not hurt a blade of grass. So sayeth the lord.

They agreed and Prayed to God for my snakes return to good health.

I really believed it helped my snake.

Her name is Merickel

older pic...one year after I got her as well in 2001/2002

She is over 12' now...

that they all have names. I've always struggled to come up with names for each and every one. I know they don't care, nor do they understand or even seem to notice when I'm talking to them. I don't care, I still wanbt to be able to identify them by name, not wow "snake" you're looking good after that shed.

they have more of a name then hey snake usualy when getting a snake from another breeder it sticks to the number and letter code they have for it till you think of somehtign new or if you bred it they have the number letter code you gave them so its hey PxJ 332x5 squared to the power of 10000000000000 while eating raw cows still mooin out in the field or somehtign like that atleast lol

now when you get a snake from some1 else that doesnt have a name or number thats the hard part

I originally purchased a pair in 2001 for 175 dollars. My best friend John seen them the second day I had them and said what are they?

I told him Leucistic Texas Rat Snakes...he said he wanted them.

I said no problem but...

The only reason I purchased them was because the breeder told me he has never heard of anyone getting fertile eggs from these the very first time the pair was bred. I told him that was hog wash. So as long as you take really good care of them and only breed them after I say it's time I don't have a problem with it.

In 2006 I told him he could bred them now.

He didn't hibernate them and she laid 8 fertile eggs and all of them hatched. Very first time she bred. One was bug eyed all other completely normal. One escaped.

He then gave all them too me as well. didn't expect that. wasn't necessary we have been friends since kindergarten.

When I told the breeder. he didn't believe me LOL...

I told him most people including himself have a propensity to prematurely breed most Herptiles and do not let them reach a more appropriate age and length etc...this was before I took Jeff Clark's advice on proper weights for Brazilians...I had bred them much lighter then he said was appropriate...guess what I changed my approach on Brazilians because of his advice that made more then good sense too me.
