I want to ship a boa. He is 4'. It will be in the 30's when I sip here and near 50 F there. How many hot packs should I use? The heat packs should be taped to the lid and 2 sides right?

I think its too cold. If it gets below the low 30's the heat packs dont work. I would suggest waiting till you have an overnight low of at least 40.
Packaging is really key ... my shippers are 1-1/2 thick styro, with newspaper insullation added, and of course, heat packs in the winter months.
Also, I only ship via Airlines ... Delta DASH probably 99% of this time, except for International shipments.
This past week I shipped to Sweden ... Indiana to New York to ICELAND to Sweden ... did you notice I said Iceland ... a 3-day shipment with 2 heat packs (replaced with fresh ones in New York).
If you follow some basics, you are pretty safe. The real exposure/risk comes with the cargo handlers while in transit ... left on runway for a long period of time, lost for a day, etc ... always nerve-racking in winter months, especially for the longer International shipments.
