Give it some dirt to dig in.

If you give your critter everything it needs, nail trimming is not needed.
Ya know, dirt to dig and tunnel in, rocks and logs to climb up and over.

Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

Just cut the sharp tip off...not a lot...just the tip. If you go past the quick they will bleed, but it won't kill them, but it does hurt them like you cutting your finger nails too short into the fleshy part.

Alex,
For the long-term health of your monitor please follow sid & kap10's advice and don't clip a monitor's nails. Any monitor.

Dogs & cats kept indoors are the ones that need their nails clipped due to walking on "unnatural" surfaces. Outside dogs & cats don't need it. Do things the natural way. Let monitors naturally wear their nails down by providing their natural needs.

Have a good one!
