New Rack

zach_whitman Jan 21, 2008 09:18 PM

I finished this rack a few months ago. Its built to be completely adjustable and can disasemble when I need to move. I can change the hight of the shelves to fit any boxes, and I can add or remove heat cable in the grooves.

Right now I have some subadult kings in the bottom five boxes, CB75 tubs measuring 22x37 inches.

In the middle in the clear tubs (Cambro) I have my colony of anthill pythons. And on the top I have a few hatchling sized cambro tubs with my holdbacks.

very nice! What did it set you back besides your time? i like the fact that you can break it down to move if necessary.

It wasn't the cheapest option, but it does everything I want it to do.

Total was probably around $800. Its hard to tell because I bought enough supplies to build two of them.

That price includes 2 thermostats, heat rope, all tubs, threaded rods, and bolts.

It has 24 snakes in it right now but could fit another 3 hatchling boxes up top.

30 bucks per cage isn't too bad.

antelope Jan 21, 2008 11:48 PM

agreed, I like the totally clear boxes as well!

Nice rack. But for $800. you could have gotten a rack for less that is not wood. The newer materials nowadays are pretty useful for long term and can be be shipped in smaller boxes.

By the way, anthills rule. Can you post a pic?

Thanks for posting those pics here. I don't really go to the python forum to read much as the only python I am really interested in is the anthill.

What materials are you thinking?

I thought about building with various plastics (sintra/caltec), but for the size shelf I need I would have to go with a very thick plastic to prevent bowing. All the prices I found made it out of the question.

If you are talking about buying a pre-made rack... I haven't found any that fit my needs. The thing is that I am at a point in my life where I am moving almost every year. Versatility was key in this design.

Also, everyone seems to dislike particle board, and I don't really know why. Its heavy but its durable and if anything happens to it, its cheap and easy to replace. That is another plus of this rack, if something warps, bows, breaks etc its easy to replace just one part.

Cheers

These are extremely light and are impervious to water. They would float if they fell in a lake. The larger tub units come in small boxes already preasembled with heat. The reason this builder makes them smaller is they fit in smaller boxesand that brings the shipping costs down because of size. Just stack and they snap together. If moving you can fit each back into a box again taking little space.

Check out the pricing!

I three of his hatchling racks, two of the small iris tubs and one 72 tub and I love them. I do use vision racks for my adults though ,just easier to move aroung and easier for me to get as I can drive to pick them up.

I think that I was the first person to find those tubs over 3 years ago. This is the first time I have seen them in a comercial rack.

Those are pretty good prices.

...but mine have belly heat...

zach, i seen this pic of yours before. must say when it come to home made rack it's not my thing but with your's i love it! the tubs that you have pictured seem to be as same as reptile basics new line of hatchling rack but your seem a bit bigger? where do i find the tubs?

zach_whitman Jan 22, 2008 05:50 PM

Ahhh if only I had never told anyone about those tubs...maybe I would be building those racks...

You can find them at the container store. They are listed as drawer organizers. I think a few other places like linens and things might carry them now as well.

There is a 9 inch one pictured below which I think is too small for all but the tiniest snakes, and a 12 inch.

derekdehaas Jan 22, 2008 08:20 PM

thanks Zach...even 9 inch is great for a hatchlings prairie kings. but i would mostly shoot for a 12 inch tubs in case for some other snakes.

bakeaway Jan 23, 2008 10:51 AM

I was at The Container Store last month and thought they should re-name the store,,,call it the Snake Container Store,,,lol
I was looking for home stuff and all I could say to my friends was how each thing would work for a snake,,,,great place.

Very nice, and 30 bucks a cage is a great price. When I avg out a heated cage in a rack system I think it was 45-65 a cage..

Looks very sturdy with all those nuts. I’m way lazy, so I would have cut some pvc pipes to slide over the rod for spacers and just “nutted” the bottom and top of the rod. Maybe you live in an earthquake zone?! One of my favorite expressions, “nice rack!”

zach_whitman Jan 22, 2008 05:53 PM

Yeah I thought of that the day after ordering the bolts. Haha. It would have been easier and cheaper too. Those bolts are a real pain to screw on.

Although I think this ended up being stronger and since I don't have a ban saw, cutting the PVC accurately would have been just as annoying!

As I am thinking about it though... having the bolts lets me change the heights without taking off all of the shelves above it.

Aaron Jan 22, 2008 05:21 PM

Very nice. Are those threaded rods just long single pieces?
