Iguana dry gangrene and aggression

Meka Jan 22, 2008 10:27 AM

I have two little iguanas I have had for about a month. The larger one is very aggressive to the smaller one. He doesnt let her sleep up next to the heat lamp, and he bobs his head at her when he is eating and she tries to come up to the food dish. I do not really know thier sex, I am just guessing. Anyway, aside from this, the smaller one had alwasy had this injury to her tail. it is toward the base. Her tail began drying up and dying from the tip up, so we got it amputated about 1/4" up from the dry part. I am worried it will continue to dry out until it reaches the injured spot. Now the larger one seems to be beginning the same thing on his tip of his tail. I am keeping am eye on it to make sure that is what it is...He doesnt have any injuries further up though...What else can I do for them, and will the tails grow back?? How long will it take and what will it look like?? Also, what can I do to make sure the smaller one is warm enough and getting enough food?

First off, separate them. They are stressing each other to the point it is affecting their health. They need their own enclosures or a divider down the center of the existing enclosure. Igs are ver territorial.

Make sure they are warm enough and fed well and the tails will grow back. Depending on how old they are, it may take only a few months.

This iguana already has other health issues going on besides the tail problem. The limbs look swollen to me, especially the right rear and that knee definately is swollen. It's skin looks unhealthy overall. The iguana looks dehydrated.

Please seperate them and provide both iguanas with proper heat, UVB, and diet. If you do not you will have at least one dead iguana before too long.
