Looks like things are shaping up for a good season in the south bay. You may have a problem though. Brazilians can't take it much warmer than 90°. Once all those BCIs are born you're going to have tons of hot hot babies around. Better get AC for the snakeroom.

Apricot and Baroque take the cake here beautifull just beautifull cant wait to see these guys as adults

rainbowsrus Jan 22, 2008 05:12 PM

The really good news along thet vein is ALL 8 of the pearls are voracious eaters. Between them all, I think only one or two meals (total, not each) have been refused and then only in deep shed. If they keep that up, they will be mature enough to breed at 2 1/2. Bad part is looking at them at arrival, I place them as late 2007 babies and they might not be ready for the 2009/2010 season as they will be just over 2 years old. Will have to wait and see. I really want to breed them as soon as I can but only when they are mature/large enough.

rainbowsrus Jan 22, 2008 05:18 PM

I sure hope you're right. I plan on feeding them just the same as I always feed my rainbows. I'll let each one decide how fast or slow it wants to grow without getting fat. Just like Amber, she decided to eat slower and is taking another year to get to size. Her choice and I respect it!!

i need to get a compairison shot but my mid 07 female albino bci is almost the same size as my late 06 male hypo arab bci i only feed a meal once a week just big enough to leave a bump not lump bump for 2-3days however my hypo harlequin lol she has grown like crazy she loves them medium rats that are about 200 gramms or so each roughly she will be huge for next season breeding

every1 grows so diff its wierd and fustrating some times but its alot better than power feeding a huge meal twice a week

rainbowsrus Jan 22, 2008 05:29 PM

I've always treated each one as an individual and tailored the feeding regimen for each. I have a couple that are mousers, don't like rats so it's several mice at a meal instead of one rat.

I could never understand the concept of power feeding, when I first heard of it, there was already a public sentiment that it was unhealthy and led to shortened lifespan. Not what I want!!!

exactly even the big snake keepers its like i hear of them givingthem huge meals every few months or every other month i would much wrather feed my snake weekly or bi weekly pending size type male female etc etc then give it a huge meal and go eh its fine for a motnh or two that isnt even to much power feeding but another one of my feeding things i dont like lol

rainbowsrus Jan 22, 2008 05:51 PM

Well, there is the thought that feast/famine is more like what they would see in the wild. They would not come across a pack of rats and only eat one of the appropriate size, they would eat all they could. Then it could be months before they found food again.

I do NOT advocate feeding large meals ever. I do however have no problem skipping a feeding for my own reasons, not enough rats around, gonna be gone on vacation etc. I actually plan feedings around vacations and NOT feed for the week before I leave. Then feed when I return. Are they hungry, you bet!! Are they starved, hardly!!

well yeah thast slightly diff tho and the wild thing lol thats the wild in humans bums on the street (the wild) eat whatever they can and take what the can and what what they can to live does that meen we should feed ourself and childern as much as they can in a sitting no cause then the world would be obese and die lol i know two way diff thigns but still a meal missed here and there or a few extra days till meal time wont kill the snake or shorten its life but feed it as much as you can is a diff story anywhso off to dinner for me all this food talk got me hungry lol

IMO anyone with more than one female (really more than two or three) Should have multiple males. You really don't want to base your entire production or even a significant portion of it on one male!! What if he decides to take the year off??

In 2005 I recognized the potential problem and held back several males. Almost as many males as females. In 2006 before those males were mature, I had one of my adult males fizzle and three females did not produce at all that year because of it!!

wow i know with boas i would never attempt 1 male to more than two females lol pythons i might try it but for the most part im more of a 1.1 to 1.2 kind of person but when it comes to rainbows a extra male thats oh so pretty never hurts lol

sad part is i got back up ball pythons for if my cinny wouldnt breed and none of them will breed lol 4 adult males to 1 adult female lol and still nothgin i think somethign is in the air here in WI that nobody wants to breed this year besides geckos lol

rainbowsrus Jan 22, 2008 05:58 PM

I'm letting som of my male BCI have "seconds" at the breeding table.

Reeses got Candy gravid and is now working on Coral.

Heath and Nestle, my pastel Motley boys, got Ruby gravid, also looks like they got Vanilla gravid as well. Now they're both playing with Jasmine seeing if they can get her gravid as well.

For my Rainbows I regularly go with multiple females to each male. Most I have ever done was 4 females to Lefty in 2005, that yesar he sired 90 babies!!! Now I'm cutting back to 1.2 for max breeding groups.
