styrofoam icechest & heatcable incubator

tragic8ball Jan 22, 2008 08:11 PM

Im looking for any advice now so that I can have it ready if/when I end up with any eggs. Im trying to put together a nice cheap incubator.

Ive got a styrofoam ice chest and repti-heat heat cable a helix thermostat & a generic digital min max thermometer.

I attached(with electrical tape) 25ft of heat cable and snaked it back and forth on the inside of all 4 walls leaving room at the bottom for a layer of water bottles and egg crate. The cable and probe wires go out a small notch at the top next to the lid

Im considering hooking up a spare computer fan but I wasn't sure how important the fan is.

If I cant find a water bottle with a good fit in the bottom can I just use a hot water bottle?

Styro is a bad idea. If your thermostat fails for whatever reason, you'll end up with a big pile of gooey styrofoam. Go find a cooler, and everything should work out.

aren't hovabators styro?

I originally was thinking it would be a bad idea but then I thought hovabators were made of the same stuff.

Ill probably get an ice chest or just go buy a wine cooler but for cheap disposable and fast its what I had on hand.

Thanks

Hovabators are styro, but the element can't melt through if the thermostat fails. The potential is there if you use heat cable like your planning.
