veiled, pawing and wandering, appetite loss

tylwyth Aug 26, 2003 04:56 PM

I have a 5 and a half month old female veiled. Just in the last week she's started pawing at the glass of her cage, (inadvertantly) digging the aspen pellets away from the corners in her attempt to get out. she lives on a 5 foot houseplant when im at home during the day, and has recently started climbing down the pot, and wandering off, into closets, behind couches ...
She's also stopped paying attention to her crickets and grasshoppers, eating the occaisional one, but with none of the passion she used to hunt them with.
I fed her very little for 2 days at the begining of last week, because all the shops were out of crickets, and the gardens running out of hoppers! could this be it? did i starve her?
I have had her since she was ~6 weeks old, and shes the only lizard i have.
distressed, first time owner, please advise!
thanks.

Chameleons do not do well in glass cages. There is not enough ventilation and seeing their reflection in the glass can cause stress
There should be no substrate on the bottom. Aspen chips can become impacted and kill your chameleon.
Digging at the floor and wandering around at the bottom are signs of stress and discomfort or illness
Or it could be a sign of a female ready to lay eggs. Females can and do lay infertile eggs. She seems a bit young for that but If you overfeed a female chameleon she can mature too quickly and be ready to lay eggs early. She may also lay overly large clutches of eggs that may lead to a shortened lifespan for her.
You need some good care sheets on chameleons.
Try www.chameleonjournals.com
Also provide her with an egg laying container in case she is gravid with infertile eggs. You can read how at http://www.chameleonnews.com/year2003/mar2003/eggs/egg_incubation.html
Good luck with her
