Will she make use of vertical space?

pavel Jan 24, 2008 03:16 PM

Hi all,

I've had my pueblan milksnake for 5 or more years now. She's currently in a 10 gal tank. I was considering switching to a "starter chameleon" cage which I might be able to get a good deal on. This would be quite a bit larger than her current domicile but mostly in the vertical. So my question is, if I were to get said cage and put some branches for climbing in it, would she be likely to make use of it or would it be a waste of $ ?

No, your Pueblan milk snake will climb very little, if at all. The only Lampropeltine I have seen climbing is the eastern king snake. Pueblan milk snakes will make much better use of a deep pile of substrate, away from the heat source (see "Gradient tips" above). Besides, campbelli are a desert species, so a natural terrarium wont have many climbing opportunities. One more thing - chameleon cages let a lot of heat escape, so you may need to use a heat lamp.
