You need a special permit to sell native species (except for morphs) in CA

First, if not already then get a valid fihsing license to collect your breeders. Then contact CA f&g and tell them your planning to breed some ca species, they will send you the permit application forums, fill them out, you'll send in the $50 fee for the permit, then make sure all sells have a recipet with your RA# on it, keep track of it all, etc. its all pretty easy. Good luck,
jeph

The only morph that is legal to sell without the permit is an albino. You still need the permit to sell any other morph of Cal kings, gopher snakes or rosy boas.

By Calif law, if your are at least 16 you are required to have a DFG Calif State Fishing License to possess WC Cal kings, gophersnakes, etc. And possess means holding in your car or on your person. With a license, you can have 4 Cal kings or 4 gophersnakes or 2 of each or 1 of one and 3 of the other.. get it? You can have only 2 rosyboas. Check the Dept of Fish & Game website or just read the fishsing license. The rules are there.

BTW, WC can mean wildcaught but not always. It just means the king didn't come from someone with a Breeder's Permit. If someone gives you a Cal king they found, you still need the Fishing License. If someone gives you a Cal king they hatched (without a breeder's permit), you still need a Fishing License.

You need to apply for and be accepted for a Reptile and Amphibian Breeder's Permit to sell or keep any offspring you produce.

If you buy or receive these animals from a breeder with a breeder's permit, you can have as many of those as you like as long as you have the receipts if challenged.

If you bulldoze an empty lot and kill all the kings, you don't need a fishing license..

Wow, some of those rules were a little hard to understand, and even false in a few cases. Get the fishing regs brochure. It will tell you the bag limit for each species. You can have 4 cal kings AND 4 gopher snakes, not 2 and 2 or 1 and 3 or anything else. You DO NOT need a fishing license to be given a snake, or to buy a snake from a store or breeder. You only need the Fishing Lic. to collect.

The breeding permit will allow you to breed and sell cal kings, gopher snakes and rosy boas. Nothing else. You may not breed Mtn Kings. Isn't that nice? BTW, I'm the guy who took that photo.

brian,

AH the great and powerful oz. Nice of you to grace us with your presence and drop by. We are all awaiting your new book on kingsnakes. Since you are here I hope you can answer a little question for us munchkins. It is a bit off topic for this thread. It has to do with the thread below.

Of the thousands of cal kings you have researched in the field have you ever seen a cal king feeding on another cal king or had any wild cal king regurge one that it fed in in the wild?

The question from below has to do with cannibalism in wild caught calif kings. Have you heard of this or any kings from the east or west coast eating each other in the wild?

I have not seen that in the wild with any subspecies of common king. I have not observed it in captivity either, but i do not keep getula together with each other.

irishanaconda Jan 24, 2008 11:47 PM

well then i thank you for the pic brian. you ever go to sonora and collect?

Tricolorbrian Jan 25, 2008 12:09 AM

No I don't.

"With a license, you can have 4 Cal kings or 4 gophersnakes or 2 of each or 1 of one and 3 of the other.. get it? "

Actually that's incorrect. With a fishing license you can have 4 Cal Kings AND 4 gophersnakes AND 2 rosy boas AND 2 rubber boas AND 1 zonata. Most other nonprotected snakes and lizards also have a limit of 2 per species.

The fence and sideblotch are a combined limit(aggregate) as you stated, with a total of 25 in any combination.

Call or write Fish and Game and they should be able to send you a copy of the regs.

Nobody is interested in what that screwed up state has to say.

That's funny but very sad at the same time..

Here in NY you can purchase Diamandback Terripins out of big buckets by the pound in chinatown to eat... but, it is illegal to keep them as pets?? go figure!

yeah, state laws always seem to manage to contradict themselves in one way or another...

My question is, since PA changed the law so you can't keep native species, does that mean I can't get an eastern king, since they used to be native but were killed off in the state a long time ago? My uncles a game warden and I still can't get an answer on that one...

Yes, 4 kings AND 4 gophers. When I'm wrong I like to do it in front of an audience.
