Hiding under the water bowl

CoffeeCreature Jan 24, 2008 06:52 PM

I have a glass lizard that needs a fairly deep substrate to burrow in. At first, I was using a deep, round water bowl that sat directly on the bottom of the tank, but I decided to switch to a broad, shallow one so she could soak if she wanted to. The substrate is too deep for this water bowl to sit directly on the bottom, so the lizard tunnels under it and hides there. Is that dangerous? Could it crush her somehow?

I have had glass lizards wedge themselves under water bowls. It always concerned me and I can see how a disaster could occur, but it never happened to me.

Consider attaching some sort of spacer system to the bottom of the water container if you're really worried about it.

Currently keeping a small collection of various Gonyosoma. Both G. janseni and G. oxycephala.

I think I'm going to do that--attach something like table legs to the bottom of the water bowl. In the mean time, I just made sure the substrate was really compact and sturdy around the edges.

This is always a quetion that i think is funny regardig any reptile species.

Hiding under the water bowl is COMMON in captivity. Why? What do you think that animal is trying to tell you? Maybe that it does not fell secure enough in the hides that you have provided it?

Give it someplace it actually wants to hide (flat/dark/tight/secure)and he won't spend as much time under that heavy water bowl.

And just for your piece of mind I have seen about a million animals under their bowls and have never seen one get injured from it. Rock stacks are another story.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking the same thing about the lack of security. So I made her current hide more appealing by putting more substrate inside so it will feel like a smaller space (lower ceiling). This was evidently effective because she's been spending more time there and less time under the water bowl. I'm going to add at least one more small, dark hide as soon as possible.
