sexing probes???

hogsandpythons Jan 24, 2008 09:27 PM

Can anyone recomend a set of sexing probes that you've been satisfied with? I've seen sets on ebay for 10 dollars and sets at retailers that look like the sets from ebay repackaged and repriced. If I'm going to buy a 10 dollar set, I'd like to pay 10 dollars for it. But I'd rather pay for better quality. I'm primarily interested in a probe to determine the sex of hatchling colubrids. Any advice on ball tipped vs straight tip etc? Thanks all! Adam

Hatchling colubrids usually arn't probed, but popped. On such a tiny snake, injury from probing is a bigger risk. Popping takes a different set of skills, but when learned, can be done safely in many species. For myself, I'm not that great at popping, (I think I'm too gentle) but have learned to compensate by palpating for the hemipenes during my attempts. My "guesses" from this way have become pretty good.
