I'm so excited about getting a corn!!!

AbsoluteRae Aug 26, 2003 05:53 PM

I went out and looked at baby corns today and I can't wait to bring one home! Seriously, they are soooo beautiful...I've been bouncing off the walls all day (can you tell?).

Anyways, this is my first adventure with a corn snake, though I've had a king and a green tree snake in the past. As far as I can tell, care is basically the same. Any special tips that you guys can give me?

Also, is reptile sand ok for corns? I was checking it out at the old pet store and it looked pretty cool...how have your experiences with it been? Or is there a better substrate for this snake?

Other than that, hot on one side, cool on the other, water, hiding places, and pinkies for my growing baby. I'm set!

NO matter what the guy at the pet shop says, DONT EVER get repti-sand.....reptile sand.....calci-sand or whatever! ANY SAND is bad for corn snakes!

The BEST substrate to use would be Asphen Shavings because it is a lot easier to spot clean when a corn snake poops.

Repti-Bark is also good but it will be a little harder to spot the the snake's poop..

also...make sure u have a water bowl with clean fresh water at all times, make sure ur corn snake cannot tip it over. it also needs a hide box....the best thing to do would be to buy a water bowl for dogs, because the place where you are supposed to hold the water bowl is a perfect opening and hideplace for corn snakes....bascially it's like a 2 in 1 thing =)

Good Luck! Ask any other questions if you need to (I will help you)

You were doing so good.
You gave pretty good advise, you helped someone new to the hobby and I thought way to go..good job...and then I saw the little juvenile remark at the bottom.
Why would you want to do that?
I thought you said you were 16?
That appears more like the remark of a 4 year old.
I just don't get it.

Those were my EXACT thoughts Draybar(Jimmy). Why...?... there's just no need to do such things.

He's kept and bred snakes since the early 70's. He endorses t-rex sand, for snakes.
