loveabull88 Jan 26, 2008 05:14 PM

Ok with some of my income taxes.. I want to build my tegu a custom enclosure..

I Have an image in my mind. And I was wondering if anyone has ever built one before?
does anyone know a site that has plans? Also I want Plexie glass..does it scratch easy?
This is gonna be a huge cage and I am expecting to spend $100-150 on materials.. does anyone know if this is about right?
Also I want to paint the outside black and the inside pink..Does anyone know a paint that wouldnt harm my lizard? And a heating pad against plexiglass wont affect it right?...Ok thx for ur help..

if u didnt know plexi is pretty expensive and id use 1/4 in. if ur usin it on doors and windows, to warn u predrill any holes ur gonna need in the plexi if u try and screw through it will break.
i have no clue about paint but linoleum is cheap amd easy to install u can also buy it with rock patterns on it, and tileboard its basically bathroom paneling that is moisture resistant is another way to go. if ur wanting to make it nice and so it will last a long time id expect an 8x4x4 to cost at least 300$

mdf is a good and cheap to use a 4x8x3/4 sheet is under 25$

the linoleum i used with a nice rock pattern was 5$ for a 1x12' sheet so three 4x12 sheets woulb be like 60$ and adhesive like 15$
then u have support beams, locks and door handles, hinges screws lights and bulbs and all the cage decor.......
at menards where i live a 2x4 sheet of 1/4 inch plexi is 23$

$150 seems low, especially given the price of plexiglas. I like plexiglas and other acrylics but these types of plastics are not without their issues. Most importantly is their tendency to warp when exposed to humidity and temperature differentials. They also are very susceptible to scratching.

Most latex house paints are safe to use in enclosures. Whether or not they are durable enough in a tegu cage depends on a lot of factors.
