Im trying to find info on field herping Western Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma. The area I will be staying in is Mena Ar. My Dad has been there for a couple of years and has seen speckled kings and box turtles. Any info will be great. Thanks

I herped around Mena a couple of years back. It is an interesting area. There are lots of neat salamanders that live not far from there (and nowhere else!). In the National Forests near there, we flipped rocks and roadcruised and in two days we found

- Canebrakes

- Red Milks

Western Wormsnakes

- Smooth Earthsnakes

Box Turtles -

Southern Redbacked Salamanders

Ouchita Dusky Salamanders

Many-ribbed Salamanders

Gray Treefrogs (H. chrysocelis)

and a handful of other species.

We didn't find speckled kings in that part of AR, but they are there and aren't uncommon. Try flipping rocks on wooded hillsides or along roadcuts.

If you can, try to get a copy of the book Amphibians and Reptiles of Arkansas by Trauth. If you are going to be there a while, it is a great book to have.

everyone thanks for the information. i have looked at the sites. was looking for area specific info.

well Chris knows what he is talking about, but most folks will not post such info on an open forum.

The herp society link was a link to folks interested in herps that live in the place you want to herp. Maybe you could investigate a little further and be rewarded, rather than have Chris tell you which rock to flip.
