Need Help Breeding Superworms!

jacton Jan 26, 2008 09:30 PM

I purchased some super worms about a month ago and separated them out individually. Kept them in the dark at about 70 degrees and left them alone. A couple of them have molted but none have pupated yet. They were aroung 1 3/4 in when I got them. I know for a fact they are actual superworms (zophobas morio) Everything I've read said they should have started to pupate by now. Am I doing someithing wrong?

I had mine in topperware with oatmeal as substrate and fed them fruit, etc which was misted prior. I used few eggs carton pieces also ontop of the oatmeal.

After 2 weeks of this I did same thing you did at 75 to 80 degrees and everyone pupated .

I mention this as was told if they are hungry or to cool wont pupate . I find them fairly easy if bred this way. Ofcourse other ways to do it but this way worked for me.

70 is a little cool, which is probably why they are slow to pupate.

Superworms are different than meal worms. If you take a full grown super worm and put it in a little container (like an empty film canister) with no food or water in the dark, he will pupate in about a week. Sometimes if you don't stress them this way they simply will not pupate. They will eat and grow and die as worms.

Will this work if i have 35 millimeter film cans that are about 75-80 degrees with superworms in them. Will they pupate and how long do you think it will take for them to pupate. Thanks, a lot Josh
