deppei photos

Joe Forks Jan 26, 2008 10:56 PM

promised these to you guys months ago.... sorry for the photo quality but they are now almost 30 years old....

The first one was east of San Luis Potosi - does not look like a typical jani hatchling, it was the only one we saw on that trip so I can't comment on the snake other than it was released right away, no pits on the permit

This one was between Doctor Arroyo and Matahuala, much more typical of the jani we see in the pet trade. This one was also released, but not until the next day after being photographed - still no pits on the permit.

I've been to Durango 3 times since 2003 and only seen smushed deppei deppei - saw them 1982 but did not get photos. I also saw sayi "just" west of ciudad Durango in Chihuahuan Desert Habitat. That habitat fades quick as you drive west onto the plateau where deppei deppei is found.

Yeah, I was taken by a deppei in creasote/mesquite plant community. There is so much work to be done taxonomically on these guys. All of the other insitu wild photos I have seen took place in juniper/scrub higher elevation lanscapes.

Thanks for the photos!

Thanks, Joe, I was just gonna ask for habitat photos. Guess their habitat is similar to the P.c. deserticolas we've got locally.

Thanks for the photos Joe. I never been to Mexico so its so interesting to see the habitat pics. Its so fun to daydream about the finding these little jewels out in the field and must be even better to actually go do it!

Thanks again

Jason

Joe, thank you so much for sharing these photos and your experience!

Deppei are, IMO, such an overlooked and underrated snake.

Oh great, I still want the snake and now I have a craving for wings. I keep hearing people talk about that wing place. We dont have it where I live in NC. I take it they have good wings? Later, Randy

DISCERN Jan 28, 2008 09:24 PM

Ok Randy...now you are killing me with the freaking Cape photos!! Stop!!

Yeah,...Wingstop is great. They have very good flavors of wings, my favorites being Garlic Parmesean and Lemon Pepper. I will eat 20 wings, a pound of fries, 2 ranch, and 1 blue cheese if I go there.

I actually only go there now about once or twice a year, but man, is it ever worth it!

This along with the earlier post are among my favorite posts on this forum lately... love those habitat shots...thanks Joe. It is interesting how the two deppei species vary across their range, but their range seemes to be varied too. So much diversity in Mexican herps due to Mexico being the most ecologically diverse place on earth. National Geographic sent science teachers a map showing all the ecosystems of the world and it was amazing to see all the divisions within Mexico.
