Hey Guys i have some shedding questions

ooohboy123 Jan 27, 2008 07:48 AM

how long does it take for a 2 year old leo to shed my leo has taken three days all she has left is her head and her toes is this normal? Is there any other ways i could help her out other than a humid hide and misting her daily.

She should be shedding all in one peice. Obviously your humidity is way too low. This is my method for any stuck skin issues:
Place a drop of mineral oil on all the stuck skin. Be careful around the eyes, nose, etc. You should see the skin soak up the oil, and go from white to clearer.
Take a tupperware container, poke a few small holes in it for air. Place a wet paper towel in the tupperware and put it in the microwave for about 10-30 sec. Let it cool until warm, not hot to the touch.
Place oiled up leo in the container and put the lid on (you did poke some holes right?) Let sit in a warm area for maybe 20 min.
Take the leo out and peel by hand, blunt tweezers, fingernails, whatever is safe and works. If neccessary, repeat.

You can see my post below on the stuck shed question, but I said basically the same thing about a gecko sauna, however I disagree with the mineral oil. At only a few days you probably don't need anything but water and patience, but mineral oil isn't the best when digested, there are several products on the market to help with loose skin that can be safely eaten when the skin is eaten. My preference is BioMist (because of its formula) and you can spray the "sauna" with that or a Qtip to roll the shed off. An older and popular one first developed for snakes is called Shed Ez, I think that is spelled the way they do it instead of Shed Ease...

Boy: I responded to your post in the other thread saying that misting the gecko can stress it out and explained why below.

Maybe we have a language barrier here, always mist your humid hide regularly and keep it in the warm side so the leo is comfortable.

When I say sauna, we are talking now about a separate container, one you would use for emergencies or vet trips, being turned into a large wet therapy box where the gecko is moved to.

Do you have either of the two recommended books on geckos? Most of your questions of late would be in them. As a new keeper "The Leopard Gecko Manual" (at less than $5) should be your bible.

I'm gonna respond to sleepy here. As for the othero ne, obviously you're not getting it.... Sleepy, a drop or two of mineral oil is not going to have serious side effects. It is true it can act as a laxative when ingested, but for an otherwise healthy leo, it wont really hurt too much. And remember than when the skin is removed most of the oil goes with it. I've never used any of those commercial shed-aid things. A large bottle of mineral oil for a couple bucks is just fine. Do you know what the active ingredients of those things are? I seem to remember a lot of the ones I looked at have aloe vera, which is an even more powerful laxative. Course if it works for you, I'm not going to tell you its a waste of your $
