Advice on Australians

repti-guy Aug 26, 2003 06:42 PM

I really like the way that the Australian water dragons look, and am considering one as a pet. The only trouble is that I cant find any information on them. If anyone can please either give me info about their size, diet, etc, or links to pages that would contain this info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

try www.agamainternational.com
Bert Langerwerf is the foremost authority on Aussies in the USA. Plus he is the one who brought and made available these guys to the states. After looking at his page if you have other questions let me know, I'll see if I can answer them. I currently have four Aussies and I am getting 4 more next month.

Thanks for the help Paul, website had a lot of great, useful information. IF you don't mind, there are a couple questions that I had for you that the site didn't really touch on. Since, like most reptiles, AWD are egg-layers, if I were to keep a single female, what problems, if any, would I encounter from her becoming potentially egg-bound? From your expereience, do males or females seem to have a better personality, which seems more handlable/readily interacts with people? In keeping only 1 adult, what cage size would you recommend not as a minimum, but as a good size to keep a AWD happy as an adult? Thanks for your time.

Well, first of all, if you were going to keep only one animal, I would go with a male for the simple fact that they are alot more colorful. As far as handling goes, I don't find a difference between the sexes. They both require ALOT of patience and time interacting with them before they calm down. As far as cage size goes, my personal opinion (based on 20 years of keeping lizards) would be 6 feet long, 2 feet deep, and four feet high. I like this size because it gives you more ground area to have a larger water container. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help. I am going to Agama International next weekend and I'm either going to come back with a nice little AWD or an Arg. B/W tegu, but I'm definitely leaning more toward the AWD. BTW, while my juvie is in his temporary setup (a 65 gallon aquarium) what is the best substrate for me to use? Thanks for all the help.
