Breeding Albinos?

THESNAKEDEN Jan 27, 2008 10:20 AM

I'm starting to get a little dissapointed with what I thought to be my gravid albino. She's 7', 26lbs and was courted and what I thought to be being breed by my DHsunglow for about two months. She went into her shed cycle which I deemed to be her POS, and I thought she was gravid. Now three weeks later she is not tightly coiled on the heat. She tends to get on the heat at night and I read temps in morning and she's at 86-88, but in the morning she gets off and stays loosely coiled towards the cooler end and temps read 84-85 for most of the day. I have been successful with my other girls who happen to be hets, this is my first year breeding this girl, who by the way was proven back in 2006(by somebody else).
Anybody with any success or knowledge of breeding albino females, can you just give me a short reply as to whether this is normal, or did your girls immediately go into the heat conservation position and stay on the heat. Also she doesn't appear to be getting thicker either?? She is also taking food, which my other girls do also.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks
J

I do know they are a little harder because they dont have the melanin to help retain heat. at least that was what I was explained.

This kind of talk is bringing me back down to reality.

Not breeding any albinos this year. Just goes to show ya, you never know, until the "Fat Lady Sings" (Big girl drops her babies). "Don't count your chickens before they hatch", as it were.

I know I have a big hypo Salmon male I bought as an adult. He's one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. He shows absolutely no interest what so ever in breeding.

Thanks guys,
The melanin makes sense, I've read that as well, the problem there is she retains the temps when she's on the heat. Just wish she would stay there like other gravid girls. My ambient temps in her enclosure remain high anyway in hopes for some babies.
And regarding counting the chicks, I'm already planning a different approach with her for next season.lol I problably shouldn't be so pesimistic, it's only been 3 weeks since her
POS(if it was that). I'll wait and see.
Good luck to everyone this season.

How long was her shed cycle, about 9 days or 20 days?

Thanks for responding, her shed cycle was actually up around 27 days. It's tough with albinos because there eyes seem to go a little white, and it's hard to get a handle on the starting point. Put her shed cycle was def extended.
Thanks

that sounds pretty good and I wish you the best with her

How did the male treat her at the end, did he totally ignore her? That's what I'm seeing with my visually gravid females.

My coral albino is definitely in HCP most of the time. Moreso at night but clearly conserving heat.

Did you see any signs of pre-ov or ovulation? I now have four girls with clear pre-ov, ov and shed (shed only on three as ov on the fourth was yesterday) Several others are looking gravid but I may have missed or not noticed the ovulations??
