Question about my brumating female

wvherp Jan 27, 2008 11:07 AM

I am trying to breed for the first time and have run into some possible trouble. My female normal corn last ate in mid November. Two weeks later I began to cool her, December 1. She has been in a cage in my basement, ave temps about 52 degrees, never reaching above 58. Today, I went down to check on her and found that she defecated, not huge but still I was surprised. Should she be brought out of brumation? If I do, can I wait til spring to mate her as the male will not come out til March. Should I be concerned. I do not want any undigested food in her stomach.
Thanks for any response

She'll be fine. I've had snakes go through the complete brumation process and defecate on the first day they were brought out of cooling. What is dangerous if if the snake is fed too close to brumation, and is not be able to digest its food. Waiting two weeks before cooling gives the snake enough time to do this, but snakes don't always defecate right after digestion.

I wouldn't worry about that in the least,..there certainly can't be much left in her now. Are you even sure it was fecal matter, and not just urates?(beige/white). In any case, I'd keep her where she is, she'll be fine.

Doug, Tim, thanks for the reply. As for the question of fecal matter, you are right Doug, it was mostly liquid and grayish.

Tim, beautiful snake!!
Thanks again,
Joel
