Need Some Advice

rubyyduby Jan 27, 2008 12:02 PM

Hi there,

I bought a timor monitor about a month ago and initially i had trouble getting him to eat. He didn't eat anything for the first two weeks that i had him and hes probably only had a few crickets since i've had him. I've also tried ground turkey with egg, pinkies, canned snails, wet dog food, and other pre packaged monitor diets. He has all the proper lighting, including UVB. His temperatures are right for his climate and i've covered all 4 walls of his cage to calm him down, but he almost never moves from his hiding spot. He has 2 hide spots on the hot and cold side of his cage and i've run out of ideas. Any suggestions as to what else i could do? It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
-Ruby

You chose the wrong Monitor if you expect it to be out and about. I can count on one hand how many Timors I've seen that would actually allow themselves to be seen.....

So timors are just normally shy. What about his lack of eating? Do they normally not eat as much as other baby monitors?

My timors are shy but not invisible. They do well in taller cages with many many places to hide and climb. The ability of the monitors to be above head level and the fact that they can escape in a split second no matter where in the cage they are, tends to make for a more secure timor.

Male timor

Female timor

The female, as you can see is a bit wary, but she does not split at the sight of her keeper and will tong feed. The male is still pretty skittish as he has not been with me for long, however, he eats like a horse.
The cage is eight feet tall. The pictures of it are from top to bottom.
As far as the eating issue, it should eat as any other young monitor so long as is has no health issues.

"His temperatures are right for his climate "

And what exactly are these?

If you want help, post pictures of your set up with a detailed discrption.
All I can tell you is to toss in some bugs and or mice and leave it alone.
Skip all the canned crap and stick with whole foods.
