little bugs in indoor tort enclosure

lilmorton1 Jan 27, 2008 05:12 PM

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone had any input on this. I just noticed little tiny bugs in my redfoot enclosure. They look like little flies, and they're crawling all over the substrate. I am using a mixture of topsoil, sphagnum moss, and cypress mulch for my substrate, and I mist it several times a day, but I keep it clean and remove any uneaten food every day. Has anyone else had something like this, and do you know if its dangerous for my redfoot? Any input would be great. Thanks.

I've heard that some people actually "bake" the moss before using and the mulch--this kills any/all little creatures living in the mulch/moss when purchased.
I don't use mulch or moss so I can' tell you at what temps to use. You may be able to find some information in some of the past forums.

Thanks! I've heard about people baking their substrate too. I never had a problem before and I used to use cypress mulch, but I keep changing it trying to find the best one for humidity and health, and I ended up finally using topsoil, moss, and mulch, so maybe I'll try baking it, or maybe just going back to only mulch. Thanks for responding!
