Any Arkansas residents?

Varanids_Rock Jan 27, 2008 06:48 PM

Hey folks. I was wondering if there are any people here who reside in Arkansas. If so, do any of you know of any places in the state in which you can dig up some good monitor dirt? Or of any landscaping places that sell any good dirt?

All the stuff around my area is full of clay and/or organic junk. The local landscaping place/nursery sells some sandy loam, but it too is full of clay. Otherwise, that would probably be great.

These two, as well as my other ackies, want some good dirt instead of this topsoil crap I've been having to use. You can see it in their eyes.

Thanks.

Cheers,
Ryan

I don't like the mixes so many folks seem to use.
I walk the creek and river banks looking for burrows.
Once found, I load up the kids, grab buckets, wheelbarrow and shovels and start hauling.
It is a lot of work, but the best source I've yet to find.

That sounds like a really enviromentally responsible thing to do. Why don't you dig up some orchids and carnivorous plants while you're at it.

What are you talking about? How is digging up dirt from the wild not environmentally responsible? I don't think that he is digging up some critter's home, just the same type of soil in that specific area.

Aww did I offend someone?
Please don't call Al Gore and tell him about all my lights.
I could be causing global warming and killing polarbears.
As for the plants? If I thought my critters would eat them, damn skippy, I'd dig them up.

That's almost funny...if I posted what I thought of Al gore I would probably get kicked off the forums. And I'm all for global warming I think it's too cold now and I live in Fl. That said that said running around digging up holes on the side of creeks and rivers not only damages the integrity of the river bank potentially causing problems but it also is the type of behavior that gives reptile people a bad name long term it gets legislation enacted against us.

I'm pretty sure that digging holes in river banks is the least of our environmental problems at the moment. I can think of a gazillion more detrimental things that folks are doing.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for conserving the environment. I just don't think digging holes is all that big of a deal. As for global warming, I personally am against it. But I don't feel all that strongly about it.

Thanks Scott. I've looked at the (Arkansas) river before, but not all that extensively. It's sort of a pain in the arse to get down to the river, as the only accessible point that I can think of is still basically within the town. I'm kind of worried about somebody coming and giving us complications.

But I will definitely try looking again. Hmmm, if I find something good, maybe I'll pay a buddy of mine to come help me dig...especially since I eventually need enough to fill up a 5 foot round trough.

Cheers,
Ryan
