Male Giant?

turtlelush Jan 28, 2008 08:09 AM

I am a turtle person but I did buy 4 leopard geckos a few months back. This male was sold to me as a giant along with a giant female who is much smaller. I was told he is about 8 months old and was wondering if he is really a giant. Here is a pic next to a C.D.

Here is the female on the same C.D.

Neither looks "giant" to me, unless they've stretched the definition some. Of course, in defense of the seller at 8 months they may not be done growing yet. The male looks to be a bit larger than the average, but the colors look pretty set so my vote would be fast growing, large male. (which means you've taken great care of them the last 4 months)

Somebody help me here, "giant" is now considered a genetic trait and can be bred for, correct? Maybe it was giant line?

The male does look to be a giant. Now if you got them both from a reputable breeder than the female is a giant as well. she does look larger than the normals i have around the same age. The only way to find out for sure would be to breed them together. If they're both true giants then the babies will hatch out pretty big compared to normal hatchlings.

both look to have streched out heads which is one thing i was told to look for in a giant. the gene acctually stretches the animal out. i would agree that they are giant.

OK, I can see the head formation and agree there, but what is the current size/ weight requirements to be considered "giant" then?

who did you buy him from? i would say he is giant.

I purchased them both from a vendor at a show. I got the pair for$120. I was asking if they were giants because I am going to buy more from him at the next show.

Both look giant to me as a breeder of some giant trempers. They have that classic long tail, lanky body and so on. Telling giants from LARGE non giants is tough, but I would purchase them as giants myself from those images.
