"wintering" a young eastern...

JP Jan 28, 2008 10:11 AM

I've got a beautiful eastern king...hatched late this summer. I've gotten 5 or 6 small pinky mice in him, and he has shed twice. I'm not sure what to do with him this winter. I keep all my snakes in an outbuilding designed for that purpose. I've been keeping the eastern in a rubbermade shoebox ewnclosure, with no supplemental heat (during the summer, the room gets into the high 80s during the day and mid to high 70s at night). Anyway, due to the various other species I keep and breed, the temps in the room have been lowered to the high 60's 24-7.

Would it be OK to keep the eastern at those temps for another 6 weeks or so, withholding feeding of course?

If not, should I:

1)figure out some way to add some supplemental heat to the enclosure and continue feeding throughout the next few months, or...

2)just leave it in the high 60's and continue to feed, or....

3)retrofit it into a rack tub that naturally has some supplemental back heat, and continue to feed, or....

4)something else...

What are your suggestions?

I know this is reduntant for most here, but the best thing is keep the snake on a hot spot on one end of about 83 and low at about 50. I know this does not seem reasonable under your circumtances but a big thing is giving the snakes a choice. If i was you I would just provide heat on one end and keep feeding the snake. If it refuses to eat just shut the heat off.
