Blotched kingsnake

apocalyp Jan 28, 2008 04:51 PM

I was wondering what other names a bltched kingsnake goes by? I very rarely see any pictures of them. I've had one for a little over a year and I can't find that much information about them in the wild.

Does anyone know what other names they might go under and where they come from?

here's a pic my uncle took over the weekend. I'll have more to post as he sends them to me.

In case he doesn't completely understand "goini" and "meansi" here's a little explanation on those from what I know. That blotched kingsnake is found in the panhandle part of north western Florida. They have been considered by many as an intergrade between the Florida & eastern chain kingsnakes. Some described them as their own subspecies and gave them the scientific name Lampropeltis getula goini. Just recently another herpetoligist has reviewed this population, re described it, and given it a new name "L. g. meansi". But some people don't agree with that and still want to call it goini. Some people even say the florida kings from central and northern Florida aren't even pure Florida kings, they are intergrades with the Eastern kingsnake. I won't argue what's what because I don't live down there and don't know anything about the area, other than the kings down there are very nice looking. Hopefully this will open a can of worms so we can get some action here again. lol

I think you are refferring to Dr. Krysco who had DNA tests done on the eastern getula. DNA don't lie.

Well then I guess it's right. I didn't know DNA tests were involved there. I've also heard Florida kings and Eastern kings may be separated from getula in the near future. That's not very surprising. They contrast Cal kings as much as Pine snakes contrast Gopher snakes, as far as body and head structure go.

I don't know how "up to date" this is because it seems to change every couple of years, but this might be useful. Hope it helps.

That snake looks like it's posing for a magazine. Can you give me tips for training mine to pose like that?

I wish ... that was a really cool and lucky shot to catch.
