Red sided - sharp pattern/colors

scott_felzer Jan 28, 2008 09:00 PM

This girl was produced from breeding the golden (aka colorless) red sided to an anerythristic red sided. She gets better looking w/ each shed.

Interesting, so she is actually het for both traits then, right? and visually different all together, so they aren't completely recessive traits? or the combo interacts?

A small portion of the babies had no red at birth, unfortunately I did not hang onto any of these (had way too many holdbacks at that point lol). If anyone here had purchased one, would be great to see a current pic of them.

She is just gorgeous! Will you be pairing the same two this year?

Hey Joanna,

How are you doing? I'll be breeding the golden to an albino this year, since he was bred to the anerythristic last year. The babies from the anery golden cross have very nice coloring and are the best looking "normal" red sideds I've ever produced.

It will be interesting to see if the babies produced with the albino will be as beautiful.

I can't wait to see what this years babies produce in a few years. I might just have to get some of those! (Sigh I keep saying I will cut back...)

Is the golden still so feisty?

He has his moments but has calmed down quite a bit from his past behavior. He is much easier to work with now.

Very nice Scott. What is the average time and/or age for the red color to peak with regards to red-sided garters? Thanks.

Steve,

The one pictured was a holdback from birth, could tell it had excellent coloration even then. The babies are as red as the adults for the most part, unlike the eastern flames/erythristics which typically gain more color as they mature. Yours is a sibling to the female pictured.

Thanks for the information Scott. My red-sided is developing some nice orange/red color. She eats great, but is nowhere near as large as my similis or radix. That female similis and axanthic radix I received from you are both taking down fuzzies. Excellent pics of all your garters. You have some gorgeous gems.
