Should you handle your uro to tame it?

bruce_y Jan 29, 2008 01:07 AM

Some people say that you should handle your uro consistently to tame it. Others say to only handle it when absolutely necessary and that it will tame down better the less you handle it -- the idea being that the uro will eventually not regard you as a threat.

What do you guys recommend?

I hate to be non-commtal, but, I would say that you have to assess the nature and attitude of your particular uro.
Just like the mindset that says all Ornates are very calm/ personable to use an example, if you assume that is the case and force "taming" on a animal that is not calm, you could have very negative results.
I really think that if you have an uro that runs for the hide whenever it sees you, that is a gonna be a tough case for taming.
In my experience with Egyptians, some are incredibly tame, while others will literally try to rip your hand off.
Even in hatchlings from the same clutch, some are more easy going while others are far more skittish.
I would recommend that if you're intent on "taming"a uro go very slowly, and use the favorite food items as a way to entice the uro to approach you.
Patience is the key.
Thats my 2 cents. Probably worth half....

I only have one uro, and don't know too much about how other people went about it. When I was taming Meatloaf down, I had to go very slowly. At first if I even opened the cage he'd run to one of his hides. Each day I would just stick my hand into the cage for a little while. Day by day I would move my hand in further and closer to him. Eventually I was able to pet him and even pick him up without him running away. Also leaving an old t-shirt in his cage seemed to help. I don't know if I would call him tame, but he has become handleable at least.

If the uro reacts negatively to handling... don't.

Base it on the individual personality of the uro. Treats help.

I never handle mine unless I absolutely have to. He used to be the syest little guy ever. He's relaxed big time. (Unless i'm in the room wearing a towel on my head after a shower) (like now)... he doesn't trust the towel. He is watching it every time I move. Its quite silly. XD

They all really do have different personalities. My adult male is pretty easygoing, loves to eat treats out of our hands and doesn't run and hide, but he is TERRIFIED of the color red. He refuses to eat anything red, even rose petals or hibiscus, and if we walk into the room wearing any red clothing, he runs and hides. He also freaks if we try to hold him, even though he's not afraid of our hands at all.

Our two baby saharans are very different from eachother. Nothing phases Pooka, she ate our of our hands from the first day and always runs over to our hand to lick and explore any time we clean, put in food, etc. Baby Chili, on the other hand, is just now getting to where she won't run and hide every time we walk into the room, and we've had her for about three months. Their personalities are so different.
