Black Ratsnake Setup

Joeycoco98 Jan 29, 2008 06:01 PM

Hello forum members,

I just returned home from Texas. While visiting I went by one of the LPS i used to frequent and could not leave without the Black Ratsnake begging me to take him home(could be a she). Now that I have him/her I am thinking I want to set him/her up in a display setup. My question is do you (those of you with display type setups) provide more floor space or height? Do they like to climb? Just looking for some suggestions for a setup. It is a nice snake with a great disposition and nice reds between the scales.

Thanks,
Miller

Yes they are notorious climbers. Mine is often draped over his small tree. If he's adult size (or going to be) I would say the smallest cage would be a 40 gallon, with some height to allow you to put a climbing tree or branch in it. I economized and got one of those aquarium-style artifificial trees with the oopening in the trunk so it doubles as ladder above and hide below. Oh be sure the cage lid is very secure, as black/Texas rats are well known for nosing the edges.

Thanks for the reply, I am about to order 5 cages from animals plastics so I will insure one is for aboreal snakes. thanks for the reply. He/she is and adult at least 4 or 5 years old. He is digesting a rat now, I will get some pics of him later in a few days. Thanks again for the response.
