when do they lay eggs?

Casper06 Jan 29, 2008 06:28 PM

I have a 1 and a half year old beardie. She is about 14 inches long and weighs 162.8 grams. She was not properly cared for in her old home. When I aquired her about 3 months ago she wieghed 81.5 grams and was 12 inches long. So she is putting on lots of weight.

I was just wondering when to expect her to start laying eggs. Should I just always have a bin of moist sand in with her?

Thanks!

is she with a male? are you trying to breed or just prevent egg binding in case she ovulates? has she burmated? ive got females who have breed in the past and now that they are not with males they dont lay eggs. if she was not well cared for in the past breeding probably isnt the thing to do just yet, id be sure she is healthy as a horse first, ive seen far to many egg bindings and complications from breeding herps that are not in tip top shape (sadly when they get to me they are usually to far gone)
sorry to ramble on, just wanted to cover all angles cuz i wasent sure where you were comming from with your post
have fun withthe new girl!

Sorry, I kinda forgot to give specifications. She is not bred, and I don't intend on breeding her. I do have a male and he is big and healthy, but with him I have never had to worry about egg binding and I want to do everything possible to not let it happen to her.

When I got her, her old owner said that she was in burmation. However, I didn't notice it when I brought her home. She was very active once I began offering her food. But I don't think she was getting very high temps in her old cage, maybe that caused her to "slow down". She was in a 10 gallon aquarium with egg cartons to climb on.

Now she has a much bigger cage (4x2x2) with highs at about 100-105 and lows at high 70s and low 80s.

Thanks for the reply!

Ours didn't start laying her eggs till she was well over a year old. She always lays them shortly after waking from brumation- somewhere around mid Feb. Our girl has always been a single female & she follows her same routine of brumating and then laying a good 2 bathces of eggs between Feb & March.

I think it's unlikely but not impossible that she would lay eggs this year at her weight. i wouldn't worry about a nest box until she has a change in behavior that signals a need for a nest box.
