Favorite tubs

CFlowers Jan 30, 2008 01:11 AM

Whats your favorite brand and size of tubs? I want to know which ones your TRUST using with the lids. Meaning not all of us can afford pre bought selves or have the carpentry skills to make are own So if your your like me you use Menards plastic selves and dollar general shoe boxes and sweater box tubs with the metal paper clips on the lids. I'm look for a different brand of tubs I can trust that the snakes won't escape w/ out using the paper clips. If you own Hondos you may know what I mean. Thanks

I use Rubbermaid 31 qt clear impressions for my young adult kings and milks, and use the 6 qts for hatchlings. I built all of my own racks up until last fall. I bought a commercial rack that takes 32 qt sterilite. They aren't bad either. This rack uses bins with no lids, so I don't put snakes in there until they are a good size. Derek

So do you use these with the lids? Have you had any escapes?
Thanks

I use a lot of different tubs without tops but the very best I have ever used that I use with a top is a Iris 15 quart (30cm by 41cm by 14cm). The tops have a overlapping rim and snap on very secure. I use them without anything on top and dont hesitate to keep high end animals in them because I have never had a snake escape from one. They are good for young small colubrids. They are about the size of a first phillips sweater box. Randy W.

Randy made a good point by bringing up the Iris tubs. I use the Iris CB-70s for a lot of my adult snakes and they have great lids that snap on. I stack some of my cages, as the lids are fitted to do so, and these tubs work quite well. I do put some books on top of the top one, but Randy is right, as the lids do fit on pretty snugly. I know Reptiletubs.com sells all sizes of Iris tubs, and some stores have them as well.

Billy it's only that paticular size that I have had fit that securely. That paticular box has a high top to it. rw

Ahhh..I see!!
Yeah, the CB-70s I use, I still feel like I gotta put something on top, but honestly, it is impressive how snug they fit on the ends.

Hope all is well bro!!

I started out using Sterilite exclusively until I built my racks. But you need to put some weight on top or they will escape. For my shoebox-sized conatiners, I put large rubber bands around the ends and middle to keep the lids secure. For my larger sterilite boxes, I stacked them up to three high and put books on top. No escapes.

Building your own rack is not too difficult. There are several online if you do a few searches you should find them. After doing a buttload of research, I finally came up with my own design. It's heavy as hell, not cheap, but it's also fairly easy to build and less expensive than any of the commercial racks of the same capacity. It's made of melamine with whitewood 1x2 spacer boards and mdf verticals. Pic below is of a three level rack. I've also done a two level hatchling and a nine level subadult rack (28qt). I tried using a cheaper material for the nine level and it didn't come out as I had hoped, but is still useable. I am about to build a ten level adult rack using the same design as the three level pictured. If you're interested, I could post specs. You really only need to cut the spacer boards and vertical supports and drill pilot holes for the screws.

I like that rack. I don't care about how light it is, as long as it functions right and cost is reasonable. The only thing different I do with mine is to cut the melamine to rest on top of the runners (horzontal pieces. This way they hold more weight, and you can remove the shelves when moving the rack.

I had hoped to do it that way, but I couldn't find any tubs of the appropriate size that were narrow enough to fit the 16" wide shelves. So with the runners flush with the bottom, they effectively add about 1 1/4" to the shelves' width.

Sean Bradley at EBN Exotics by Nature has plans for a good rack setup for rodents or snakes or whatever on his website.....

my mouse racks are based upon this and 2 ball racks with 34 inch boxes.......

they are open ,screen topped, no lids and no heat tape though
