Retained Eggs

medyssa Jan 30, 2008 10:39 AM

So last night when I got home I put Cleo into the bathtub and tried to get her swimming around, she seemed to really enjoy her bath but nothing came out with me trying to work the egg out manually with my hands. She seemed to be trying to push a bit as well but her rear end was mainly curled up and it was hard to tell. I turned up the temps on her cage in hopes that it might get her to move around a bit more overnight, she has the first egg pushed up to her cloaca but hadn't pushed anything out when I left this morning. I am going to try again with the bath tub tonight if there isn't anymore progress. I did speak to my vet last night and he said he would only be able to try and manipulate them out by hand or perform surgery which he said is very expensive and the snake might not survive after, although most are successful in recovering ability to use the nether-region organs, she would not be able to breed. Not that I would need her to breed after that anyway, but the cost of the surgery would be far out of my reach even if my parents pitched in. Hopefully home remedies work.

Hope everything goes well for you. Maybe she'll have pushed them out on her own by the time you get home. *Fingers crossed*

Thanks for the post, I appreciate the good vibes, I am hoping the same thing but I have to keep myself from getting to caught up in hoping that it works out and I am planning for the worst. I hate being that way.

Wow, I hope she gets them out all on her own. Surgery would definetly be no fun, so here's good luck to her!

Hehe, Thanks for making me smile Dave. I needed that. I was telling my roommate last night not to look in the bathtub when he was going pee. He came out saying that he had to look. He asked what I was hoping would happen, I told him I just hope that theres a couple big blobs and a nice mess for me to clean up. I dont think he was too excited to get into the shower this morning with that image. :P

Jess,
...I am still only guessing that the problem may be retained ova. Digestive problems and internal parasites can create similar seemingly stuck masses. Snakes, especially Rainbow Boas with any sort of health problem often dehydrate which usually worsens the problem. If I was you I would soak her in warm water in a closed container for at least another hour this evening and then put her in the bath tub to let her swim. I have occasionally gotten slugs out with manipulation but there is the risk of injury if you go at it too vigorously.
Good luck,
Jeff

I was really careful about trying to manipulate them out by hand, I didnt want to use too much pressure. I can imagine that it most likely is retained ova because they are more solid, they are both about the same size and they do move up and down her body with her movements and also when I was trying to get them out. She is soaking right now in warm water I will be putting her back in the bath later.
